Beacons School Success - Lead (Nellie Stone Johnson Community School) (Administrative)

YMCA is seeking a dedicated Beacons School Success Lead with a passion for youth development to lead staff and serve as a mentor, role model, and educator within the YMCA Beacons network. The role involves creating a fun and inclusive environment while planning lessons and leading group activities. Specialized skills (e.g., dance, music, art, sports) are welcome but not required. This is a 15‑20 hour per week position, Monday‑Thursday after school (located within Nellie Stone Johnson Community School).

The salary for this position starts at $17.00 per hour. The base pay may vary based on an individual's background and experience. The compensation package includes a range of benefits and earned time off that differ for part‑time and full‑time status.

Beacons is a collaborative community initiative that provides after‑school and summer care for young people in grades K‑12. Through Beacons, the YMCA of the North offers high‑quality educational, recreational, and leadership development activities, and works to eliminate barriers to participation for all youth.

Job Summary

YMCA Beacons School Success programs engage youth as leaders and learners by transforming schools into active youth centers after school and in the summer. The programs provide free, high‑quality educational, recreational, and leadership development activities for kindergarten‑12th‑grade youth and their families at eight Beacons School Success Centers located in neighborhoods in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Richfield. The Beacons School Success Lead Staff are mentors, role models, allies, and educators.

Lead staff develop, plan, and lead groups of youth after school and operate at a specific Beacons School Success center, providing quality enrichment experiences that focus on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Essential Functions
  • Plan, develop, and implement enrichment curriculum and program activities with a group of young people.
  • Provide work direction to program staff and volunteers while on duty.
  • Evaluate the program continuously and recommend needed changes to the Beacons School Success Sr. Coordinator and/or Program Director.
  • Ensure that the center and classroom spaces are kept clean and organized.
  • Perform administrative activities to support the program, including collecting daily attendance.
  • Assist in promoting the program, including recruiting young people, communicating with families and school staff.
Relationships

This position reports directly to the Sr. Coordinator or Program Director and interacts with participants, parents, staff, school employees, and the community.

Qualifications Required
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Experience and/or education in youth studies, child development, human relations, communication, or recreational programs.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire:
    Adult and child CPR or CPR/PR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and facilitate youth development programming.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and mediation skills.
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with school‑age children in an enrichment setting.
Preferred
  • Minimum six months of experience working with school‑aged youth.
  • Degree in education, recreation, or a field related to child care.
  • Supervisory/management experience.
  • Multilingual.
  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed and youth development best practices.
  • Specialized skills that can be taught to youth (e.g., dance, music, computer skills, art, sports).
Work Conditions

Ability to move throughout a school building regularly throughout the day. Must actively participate in youth games/activities. The work environment ranges from quiet work areas to busy, noisy indoor and outdoor spaces with several groups talking simultaneously. May be exposed to verbal outbursts, physical action, or bodily fluids. Perform all physical aspects of the position, including moving around, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Ability to recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous or dangerous situations.
