Summary

The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for teaching the knowledge and tools needed for students to pass their GED exam and to be better prepared for the personal and professional technology needs of today. This position emphasizes educational instruction core academic subjects and is the primary instructor in American Indian OIC's Adult Basic Education program.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach and tutor students in core general adult education subjects at varying levels based on student needs and assessments. Develop study plans and assignments for individual students based on their needs and goals.
  • Develop curricula and teach introductory digital literacy and work readiness courses.
  • Prepare, plan, and facilitate collaborative learning opportunities via in‑person learning circles, workshops, and online classes.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance the integration of Indigenous practices, culture, coursework, and community engagement into the program.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Develop and adapt curriculum based on Minnesota Adult Basic Education content standards.
  • Prepare materials and classroom for both in‑person and online class activities.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Provide guidance and preparation for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law or policy.
  • Communicate with team members to discuss individual student needs and progress.
  • Assist with administrative tasks like developing reporting narratives, stories of student success, and preparing for events, etc.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Minnesota teaching license, ABE teaching license, or actively pursuing a degree in education.
  • One year teaching experience and familiarity with Minnesota’s Adult Education system.
  • Cultural competency working in a diverse environment, with an understanding of Minnesota’s Indigenous communities, cultures, and practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency using a personal computer and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to create a welcoming, and trusting atmosphere for students and team members.
  • Proven time management skills and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use and adapt to different technology tools including databases.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and seek out solutions.

Compensation & Status

The Adult Education Instructor is a full‑time, nonexempt, year‑round position, with compensation starting at $27.50 per hour. Office hours are 8:30 am–4:30 pm, however regular weekend or evening instructional hours may be required.
