Burns & McDonnell’s Upper Mid-West Region is looking for a Senior Engineer to join its operations and manage and support environmental investigation and remediation projects for clients across a variety of sectors, including electrical utility, solid waste, mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, renewable energy, and others. The role focuses on groundwater remediation, including feasibility studies, pilot testing, and full-scale design, operation and maintenance.
The Senior Engineer will develop and support multiple projects from a remediation and environmental engineering perspective, manage independent project tasks, and assist with marketing and business development. They will handle proposal development, scope of work, scheduling, negotiation with regulatory agencies, management of subcontractors, contracts, schedules, and budgets.
Responsibilities- Perform task and project management responsibilities for manufacturing, transportation, solid waste, oil and chemical, Coal Combustion Residual (CCR), and other civil/environmental engineering projects.
- Manage accuracy, scope, budgets, contracting, quality control and quality assurance, safety, reporting, schedule and client expectations.
- Act as a technical resource for environmental remediation and engineering projects.
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering design teams for civil/environmental related projects.
- Design and operate remediation systems, including in-situ remedies, cover systems, recovery and treatment, waste management, etc.
- Engage in client and business development, networking and outreach.
- Assist with and lead proposal and cost estimating efforts for environmental engineering and remediation projects.

- Mentor and work closely with junior level environmental staff.
- Assist with recruiting, development, and training of staff.

- Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental or related engineering program from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 7 years of related professional experience; preferably 10 years with civil and environmental projects across various sectors.
- PE License, preferably in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
- Experience with coal combustion residual (CCR) projects is strongly preferred.
- Experience with project management, environmental regulation, and agency coordination (EPA, state agencies, etc.).
- Experience executing civil/environmental engineering methods and preparing bid-ready designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports.
- Experience reviewing work products prepared by junior staff.
- Mining industry experience is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of civil and environmental engineering methods, permitting processes, and construction compliance.
- Ability to perform quality reviews for environmental reports and deliverables.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Valid driver’s license and compliance with Company Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
- OSHA 40‑hour HAZWOPER training (annual updates required).
- Ability to travel (potentially 15 %) or as required.
$ – $ annually. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in the Company’s discretionary year‑end incentive bonus program.
