L & S is looking for a full‑time Power Systems Specialist for the Minneapolis region. We seek a self‑motivated professional with excellent problem‑solving and communication skills who can work both in a team and independently. We are willing to train someone with an interest in electricity and power.
Responsibilities- Ground grid testing, medium voltage cable testing.
- Service and test transformers, relays, breakers, switches, and other electrical apparatus/systems at utility substations and industrial facilities.
- Troubleshoot and test control circuits, communications systems, protections systems and other electrical apparatuses.
- Perform breaker and relay retrofits.
- Read prints and control/protection schemes.
- Complete and submit reports accurately and timely.
- Apply test procedures for various relay test equipment.
- Substation awareness and safety consciousness.
- Quickly learn and apply test procedures for various substation equipment.
- Good PC skills and support testing activities as required by the project lead.
- Perform testing on low and medium voltage breakers including Megger, Ductor, Hi‑Pot, Hi‑Current, and timing tests.
- Testing on power transformers including Power Factor, TTR, insulation resistance, winding resistance.
- Computer skills:
Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and software designed to interface with test equipment for testing and reporting. - Complete mechanical work and repairs on breakers including wiring, painting, and parts replacement.
- Utilize and accurately read meters.
- Read and plot curves.
- AA in Electrical Power, EE, or 5+ years field experience.
- Proficient computer and phone skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work on a flexible schedule based on client/customer needs.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Effective communication skills.
- Extensive travel; up to 5 days/week with overnights possible.
- On‑call duty approximately six times per year.
- Experience as a Switchgear/High Voltage Technician; proficiency with high voltage test equipment and knowledge of low and medium voltage test equipment.
- Prior experience in a similar position.
- Electrical and mechanical aptitude.
- Very active; requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, crawling, and reaching frequently.
- Aerial work may sometimes be necessary (ladders or scaffolding).
- Occasional lifting of heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
- Frequent use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
- Ability to adhere to applicable safety practices for the site.
- Uneven or slippery walking surfaces.
- Able to wear proper PPE (hearing protection, safety glasses, hard hat, etc.).
- L & S will provide a vehicle or a stipend for a vehicle.
- Some relocation assistance may be available.
Typically from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm with potential for overnights and weekends during busy seasons.
