Mortenson is currently seeking an Application Storage Engineer III that will be responsible for completing routine engineering assignments of limited scope and complexity by doing pursuit and preliminary engineering, 3rd party reviews, design phase and construction support for energy storage and medium voltage distribution systems. The candidate will work closely with Design Phase Managers, Project Managers, other engineering/design team members and customers to coordinate the pursuit and design package and requirements.
They will perform a broad scope of preliminary pursuit and engineering assignments and tasks of moderate difficulty requiring knowledge of industry designs, products, and engineering-related disciplines in regard to battery storage and distribution systems. The candidate will have a customer facing role to showcase Mortenson’s technical capabilities within the energy storage industry. They should understand project requirements and be capable of reviewing, evaluating, and developing project ideas and options by applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using good judgment in adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with limited support from other engineers.
- Comfortable interfacing and presenting to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision makers, project teams).
- Provide technical support to personnel/cross functional teams for proposals, estimating, procurement and construction.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, Project Managers and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects.
- Participate on project teams that execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.
- Begin performing lead technical designer tasks on 2–3 large design projects annually across all project scopes.
- Mentor, guide and manage other Engineering Professionals.
- Technical review, approve, and selection of equipment vendor quotes on major equipment from manufacturers with Design Phase Manager/Lead Engineers review.
- Collect and evaluate data to recommend courses of action.
- Ensure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects/tasks consistent with engineering policies and Mortenson QA/QC procedures.
- Perform data analysis and engineering tasks, calculations, and studies to develop preliminary and detailed designs for completion of large and small projects.
- Develop technical specifications, provide direction and guidance to drafters and designers, direct the flow of drafting and designer duties, ensure design schedules are met, and provide regular project status updates to the project engineer.
- Handle multiple projects and provide a detailed design package that complies with applicable engineering design standards and safety codes.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of discipline-specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.
- Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Review engineering work to achieve a first-time review rate of 80% correct on documents.
- Understand and apply the equation S = P + jQ.
- Verify construction aligns with civil and protection engineering design drawings, including preparatory meetings and QA/QC.
- Develop and evaluate technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages.
- Create detailed designs aligned with customer requirements and Mortenson’s best-practice standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering program
- 4+ years of related experience
- Working knowledge of or familiarity with Project Controls software (e.g., Procore, Unifier)
- Knowledge in system integration, product adaptation, and design development for systems
