This position offers an opportunity to design, deploy, and support complex control systems for custom machinery, leading project components and providing technical guidance to shop personnel and customers.
Responsibilities- Develop control concepts and set control direction on complex projects.
- Design cost‑effective control systems for custom machinery, including hardware design, programming, safety analysis, and technical documentation.
- Analyze technical challenges and devise creative solutions using available knowledge and resources.
- Guide and support shop personnel during electrical assembly of control systems and machines.
- Lead and participate in control system debugging, provide on‑site installation support, and conduct customer training.
- Provide initial estimates of control system costs for quotations based on mechanical concepts and customer requirements.
- Cooperate with the Applications Engineering team to evaluate project feasibility.
- Collaborate across teams and disciplines to ensure alignment.
- Mentor junior engineers and conduct code/design reviews.
- Work proactively and independently to complete projects on time and within budget.
- Motivate self and others in a positive and professional manner.
- Delegate appropriately to engineering support and shop personnel.
- Communicate project status and potential obstacles to stakeholders.
- Effectively engage with customers and vendors to ensure successful project completion.
- Lead project teams as required.
- Identify inefficiencies and propose process improvements.
- Stay current with new technology, engineering methods, and industry standards.
- Lead the implementation of new engineering methods and technologies.
- Facilitate professional development by sharing lessons learned through project successes and failures.
- Participate in training and mentoring of other employees as appropriate.
- Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, or a related two‑year post‑high‑school diploma/certificate and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive Experience with Programmable Logic Controller programming on a variety of platforms.
- Extensive Experience with Rockwell Automation Control Logix family of programmable controllers.
- Experience with multiple IEC 61131‑3 programming languages (Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, Sequential Function Chart, Instruction List).
- Proficiency in configuring, tuning, and programming servo‑based motion control systems.
- Experience configuring and programming industrial robots.
- Knowledge of ISA‑88 and/or PackML modular programming concepts.
- Experience preparing engineering documentation including electrical schematics, bills of material, process & instrumentation diagrams, and operator and maintenance manuals.
- Solid understanding of computer networking, TCP/IP, and industrial field‑bus architectures such as Ethernet‑I/P.
- Proficiency in electrical control system design for industrial machinery, including power distribution, PLC configuration, and machine safety.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and logical systems efficiently and accurately.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of standards relevant to industrial machinery (NFPA 79, UL 508A, NEC, EN ISO 13849, IEC/EN 62061).
- Experience configuring and programming vision systems.
- Experience with an electrical engineering CAD program (e.g., Solid Works Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical, ePlan).
- Programming skills in high‑level languages (C, C#, Python) and/or relational databases.
- Knowledge of GAMP principles and procedures.
$110,000‑$135,000
