Lead Optical Scientist – Brooklyn Park, MN
We are seeking a Lead Optical Scientist to support R&D and commercial activities. The ideal candidate has a clear history of leading technical projects, realizing expected outcomes, a broad understanding of several technical disciplines, and deep expertise with engineers, scientists, and technicians. A strong work ethic and high reliability are required. All applicants for safety‑sensitive positions must submit to a pre‑employment drug test.
Key Responsibilities- Lead technical projects on‑site and cross‑site at the direction of management.
- Design, build, integrate, validate, and troubleshoot optical systems, including lasers and imaging systems.
- Provide technical expertise to maximize performance and robustness of optical projects.
- Mentor junior staff with hands‑on, in‑lab troubleshooting and technical guidance.
- Prepare and review engineering specifications, statements of work, SOPs, and related procurement, operation, maintenance, and repair documentation for optical, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Support procurement and materials management in acquiring and tracking technical equipment and infrastructure through lab development phases.
- Bachelor's degree minimum.
- Minimum 10 years (M.S. or Ph.D. inclusive) of experience designing, developing, building, using and maintaining optical, opto‑mechanical, and/or laser systems.
- Must be a U. Person (citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, asylum or refugee status).
- Not a PRC or Russian national unless a U.S. citizen, due to national security requirements.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
- Experience leading a team of scientists to complete well‑defined projects and broader research initiatives.
- Demonstrated history of mentoring junior scientists.
- Broad understanding of optical principles and practical application to projects.
- Experience characterizing, stabilizing, servoing diode, fiber, and/or Ti:
Sapphire lasers. - Experience with quantum information processing and/or quantum computing.
- Experience with engineering change process.
- Ability to work from assembly drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches, and written, visual, and oral instructions.
• Incentive eligible – pay range $154,000 – $193,000 annually; actual compensation varies based on skills and experience.
