The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry‑specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The role also includes understanding potential tax issues, communicating risks, monitoring changes in policy, and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.
In addition, the Tax Managing Director is a critical member of the office/region leadership team with direct supervision responsibilities and participates in marketing, networking and business development while maintaining client relationships.
- Tax Compliance – ensure clients and internal teams comply with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and Firm policies.
- Research – identify when research is needed, frame issues, and report analysis.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals – apply Firm policies and technical expertise in income tax provisions.
- Tax Consulting – develop efficient methods to maximize client benefits, apply industry knowledge to recommend solutions.
- Tax Specialization – develop in‑depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, international).
- Strategy Development – introduce new ideas to improve client or Firm position; may present strategies to clients.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise associates, senior associates and managers as situation dictates.
- Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide comments.
- Act as a Career Advisor to staff.
- Schedule and manage workload of staff.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
- Bachelor’s degree required, major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- 10+ years’ relevant tax experience in public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction or IRS Enrolled Agent required.
- Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software.
