PUBLIC NOTICE – DEA Criminal Investigators

This is a public notice for Drug Enforcement Administration Criminal Investigator positions (GL‑1811‑7/9/11) open to U.S. Citizens. A formal job announcement will appear on USAJobs on January 12th and April 6th, 2026.

Duties
  • Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.
  • Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other investigative measures.
  • Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and experience.

Basic Agent Training

Applicants who have not completed prior federal law‑enforcement training must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal law‑enforcement agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.
  • Must sign a mobility agreement accepting relocation to any DEA location.
  • Must complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual examination.
  • A full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph is required; prior successful polygraph may qualify for reciprocity.
  • Selective Service registration or exemption required for eligible males.
  • Age: at least 21 and not older than 36, unless veteran or prior federal law‑enforcement retirement covered position.
  • Pass E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period, as appropriate.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.
  • Random drug testing.
  • Complete 16‑ to 20‑week basic agent training at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Qualifications GL‑07 Level
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑05, including:
    • Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law;
    • Writing reports of findings, results, or accomplishments;
    • Researching, collecting, and analyzing data from赛 various coque,
  • Substitution of education for experience: one full year of graduate‑level education in a related field, or superior academic achievement (SAA) as described.
  • Combination of education and experience: a computed percentage of at least 100 % (experience plus graduate semester hours) as per OPM guidelines.
GL‑09 Level
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑07, including:
    • Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law;
    • Collecting and analyzing data from various sources;

    • Meeting or corresponding with court officials and law‑enforcement personnel;
    • Assisting prosecuting attorneys in preparation of cases or testifying for court/administrative proceedings;
  • Substitution of education for experience:
    Master’s degree or two full years of graduate education, or LL.B. or J.D.;
  • Combination of education and experience: computed percentage of blå at least 100 % (experience plus graduate semesterાવવા hანიის equivalents).
GS‑11 Level
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑09, including:
    • Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations with federal law‑enforcement agencies;
    • Developing operational plans and investigative priorities;
    • Operating undercover, conducting surveillance, and participating in raids, seizures, and arrests;
    • Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources;
    • Interviewing and interrogating persons suspected of violations of law;
    • Organizing evidence for presentation to prosecution officials and testifying in court; or
  • Substitution of education for experience:
    Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of progressiveੁ graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or LL.M.;
