About the Job

A Researcher 3 position is available in the laboratory of Dr. John Hulleman (@Hulleman Lab) in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota. The Hulleman Laboratory is dedicated to developing treatments for debilitating eye diseases by leveraging newly gained perspectives in biochemistry, chemical biology, and gene therapy. We have an opening for a researcher position (funded through multiple sources) that focuses on maintaining our animal colony, with the potential for independent research in the future.

Candidates must hold a B.S. or B.A. degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, chemistry, biochemistry) and have 2 years of non-course related wet lab experience. Candidates must be self-driven, creative, and willing to learn new techniques in a quickly evolving environment. Experience with analyzing complex data sets or the ability to program is a plus. The individual who fills this position must also be willing to work with rodent models of ocular diseases.

This is a perfect opportunity for an individual to gain critical experience before transitioning on to graduate school.

Job Duties
  • (25%) Animal work - mouse colony maintenance that involves breeding, husbandry, and maintaining appropriate records and tracking animals.
  • (45%) Conduct research using techniques which include ocular injections, tissue isolation, papain dissociation, protein extraction, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, sample preparation for mass spectrometry and RNAseq, immunofluorescence microscopy.
  • (10%) Perform visualization of dyes in vivo in the mouse eye using SLO and fundus imaging.
  • (10%) Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.
  • (5%) Carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.
  • (5%) Participate in scientific conferences.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and two (2) year of wet lab experience (not through undergraduate courses) or equivalent combination of education and experience to equal five (6) years. Education in a biology, biochemistry, or health science related field.
  • Experience with animal handling, tissue dissection
  • Familiar with genotyping and DNA analysis
  • Good fine motor skills are required for ocular injections and dissection.
  • Superior analytical, communication and management skills.
  • Excellent communication and logical reasoning abilities.
  • Flexibility in hours is expected for the care of the animals.
  • Required to safely handle hazardous chemicals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ocular imaging in humans or in rodents.
  • Demonstrated independence.
  • Experience in processing and analyzing samples for electron microscopy

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.61hr to $29.81hr, we anticipate most offers will be around the midpoint of this range, depending on education and experience.
