SUMMARY

Hennepin Healthcare has a current opening for a Maternal‑Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer in our OB Testing Diagnostic Lab. This casual position will pick up day shifts and involves performing specialized obstetric and gynecologic diagnostic ultrasound scanning procedures, reporting preliminary findings, and educating healthcare providers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform high‑risk obstetric ultrasounds with Maternal‑Fetal Medicine specialists, including first‑trimester, detailed fetal anatomy assessment, comprehensive second and third trimester scans, transvaginal ultrasounds, Doppler studies, antenatal surveillance, and 3D/4D imaging.
  • Conduct ultrasounds on patients with high BMI, multifetal gestations, nuchal translucency and nasal bone assessment, and cervical length assessments.
  • Use accurate clinical judgment during exams to differentiate normal and pathological findings.
  • Apply cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt imaging studies and antenatal surveillance based on anatomical and diagnostic information.
  • Analyze images and synthesize findings with clinical history; communicate results to physicians and care team members.
  • Assist physicians in diagnostic and therapeutic fetal procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal fluid drainage, injections, blood sampling, and transfusion.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the sonographic exam.
  • Educate, assist, and communicate effectively with patients and families, providing emotionally supportive and culturally appropriate care.
  • Assist with daily operations of the ultrasound department, including maintenance and cleaning/sterilization of equipment.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting skills and notify appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.
  • Support efficient department workflow by monitoring inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Establish and maintain ethical and professional relationships, maintaining confidentiality of work information.
  • Coordinate with staff and referring providers to ensure patient‑centered care.
  • Provide ultrasound skill training for technologist students, medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Coordinate work schedule with supervisor or scheduling desk to ensure coverage.
  • Maintain practice standards as outlined by the American Society of Radiologic Technicians (ASRT) and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in ultrasound technology and graduation from an accredited School of Ultrasound Technology by CAAHEP.
  • Certification or certification‑eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS); if eligible, must obtain obstetrics & gynecology certification within one year of hire.
  • Maintain minimum CE credits as mandated by ARDMS.
  • Hold current CPR certification or obtain it within four months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of obstetric ultrasound experience.
  • ARDMS certification in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
  • ARDMS certification in Fetal Echocardiography.
  • Education and/or certification in Nuchal Translucency and Nasal Bone.
  • CLEAR certification for cervical length assessment.
