About the Job
The Risk Management Specialist is a valued contributor to the Risk Management team and reports directly to the Director of Risk Management and Insurance. This position serves as a primary point of contact for both internal and external customers. The role works closely with departments across the University of Minnesota on insurance‑related questions and collaborates with the University’s insurance broker to prepare and coordinate insurance renewals.

Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesInsurance Program Support (35%)
- Lead the preparation and coordination of insurance renewal information, including applications and underwriting exposure data, for the University’s commercial insurance programs (Property, General, Professional and Auto Liability, Crime, Media, Marine, etc.).
- Serve as the central point of contact among University departments, the insurance broker, and the captive manager.
- Analyze and review University contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with insurance standards, proactively consulting with departments to minimize risk exposure.
- Maintain the University’s insurance policy list.
- Initiate and process critical financial transactions, including vendor payments, purchase orders, and professional service contracts, in coordination with the University’s Financial Operations Team.
- Calculate, coordinate, and process the annual insurance cost allocation and premium chargebacks to departments across the University of Minnesota.
- Monitor and reconcile Risk Management’s central University budget account(s).
- Track and generate reports for the $2.7 million annual property claims budget.
- Reconcile vendor accounting records and transactions with insurance brokers, insurers, actuaries, and Third‑Party Claim Administrators.
General Administrative Support (40%)
- Manage the departmental email account, serving as the front‑line point of contact to triage inquiries and refer complex matters to appropriate subject matter experts.
- Facilitate the issuance of certificates of insurance by the broker.
- Review and process internal and external Alcohol Use Applications in compliance with University policies.
- Serve as backup to the Claims Specialist, responding to inquiries related to claim filing, claim status, payroll information requests, and invoice payments.
- Establish, maintain, and archive departmental files and key documents in accordance with University records retention guidelines.
- Assist with Google Calendar management and meeting scheduling.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of professional work experience,
or a combination of related education and work experience totaling six years. - Self‑motivated, assertive, and highly detail‑oriented professional who takes initiative to move projects forward.
- Demonstrated experience in data analytics with the ability to process complex data sets and manage server‑based data entry.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to independently diagnose complex problems and implement effective solutions.
- Proficiency in standard office software, including Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Calendar, and related tools.
- Direct experience working in insurance or risk management, including property, liability, auto, and workers’ compensation insurance.
- Strong knowledge of University policies, procedures, operations, and internal resources.
$63,000 – $75,000 (depending on education, qualifications, and experience)
