About the Job

The Temp Casual Employee will perform structured research‑related work assignments requiring knowledge and experience in the field of microbiology, while still acquiring knowledge and skills. The individual must build lab‑specific knowledge of processes and technical protocols to assist with daily functions of the research group. This position will involve optimizing protocols and performing technical assays. The Temp Casual Employee will receive guidance and direction from the supervisor but should also work independently on tasks specific to their expertise.

Duties

80% – The Temp Casual Employee will assist with experimental design, carry out experiments using established protocols (including working within BSL‑2 laboratory for culture of bacterial organisms, conducting tissue culture experiments, generation of site‑directed mutant strains and libraries of mutant strains), and analyze data.

20% – The Temp Casual Employee will assist with general tasks that improve the daily function of the laboratory that include preparation of stock solutions, autoclaving, keeping track of supplies, and assisting with general lab maintenance.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in a Biomedical, Genetics, Molecular, or Cellular Biology Science, including coursework in genetics, cell biology, microbiology, bacteriology, and at least 1 year of related experience in benchwork
  • Experience working in a biosafety level 2 laboratory with microbial pathogens
  • Experience executing, troubleshooting, and developing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols
  • Experience with microbial genetics, including Lambda red mutagenesis and basic bacterial cultures
  • Experience working with mammalian tissue culture models
  • Proficiency in protocol writing, pipetting, bacterial culture (serial dilutions, adjusting stock concentrations, plating)
  • Experience with Microsoft tools such as Word, Excel, and Power Point

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience presenting scientific data
  • Demonstration of leadership skills
  • Experience with data and file management

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $17.50/hour
