This is a temporary/seasonal/limited appointment position that is responsible for monitoring pool activities to ensure the safety of swimmers by enforcing pool rules and regulations; and by assisting in the maintenance and sanitary upkeep of the pool, pool area, and locker rooms. This position must also be able to interact with the public in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
Work ScheduleAquatics Center: Positions are available late May through early September. Work schedules vary between 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, and 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.
Recreation Center: Positions are available year round, mainly on weekends. Hours will typically fall 12 pm-3 pm on Saturday and Sunday as well as additional hours available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 2:45 pm-4:15 pm.
Pay Rate: $15.76 to $18.39 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience.

Duties And Responsibilities Lifeguard Duties- Monitor activities and swimmers at the pool to prevent accidents.
- Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
- Administer First Aid as necessary.
- Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce and adhere to pool rules and regulations.
- Follow emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
- Maintain order in the pool and adjoining areas.
- Inspect facilities for cleanliness; complete general pool cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment).
- Provides general information on pool operation to patrons.
- Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
- All Lifeguard duties; in-charge lifeguard on duty.
- Manage staff schedules and assignments to ensure coverage during open pool hours.
- Take the lead on emergencies that may arise.
- Answer complaints from the public and help navigate other challenging situations that may arise using conflict resolution strategies.
- Applicants must be at least 15 years of age.
- Possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including First Aid and Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by May 10, 2026.
- One (1) year of experience working as a lifeguard.
- Pass swimming and life‑saving proficiency test administered by Lifeguard Manager.
- Not all Lifeguards interested in being a Head Lifeguard will be selected as there are a set number of openings.
All Lifeguards must have a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification including First Aid and Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation. Below are options for obtaining this certification if you do not have it.

- If selected as a candidate with the City of Rochester, we will be hosting certification courses on the below dates (more dates to come). If conditionally offered a position, you will need to pass a background and this certification process.
