Weapons Systems Test and Evaluation Engineer

BAE Systems is seeking a hands‑on Weapons Systems Test and Evaluation Engineer to design, execute, and analyze component and subsystem reliability tests in support of next‑generation products. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical engineering fundamentals with practical experience in thermal, vibration, and accelerated life testing.

This role involves close collaboration with design engineers and cross‑functional teams, with regular travel to off‑site test facilities (approximately 25% of the time). The position is on‑site, following a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement testing methods and equipment.
  • Plan and arrange the labor, schedules, and equipment required for testing and evaluating standard and special devices.
  • Provide test area parameters for sample testing and specify tests to be performed.
  • Compile data and define changes required in testing equipment, procedures, manufacturing processes, or new testing requirements.
  • Develop and execute component and subsystem test plans to evaluate functionality, performance, and reliability.
  • Define accelerated life test (ALT), HALT, HASS, and ESS methodologies aligned with physics‑of‑failure principles.
  • Perform reliability modeling, Weibull analysis, MTBF calculations, and life prediction assessments.
  • Lead test setup design, instrumentation planning, and data acquisition (thermal, vibration, and electrical).
  • Conduct hands‑on testing including thermal cycling, vibration, fatigue, and electrical endurance tests.
  • Perform root cause and failure analysis (RCA/FMEA) and drive corrective actions with design teams.
  • Travel to and oversee testing at external labs and proving grounds (~25% of the time).
  • Maintain compliance with safety and quality standards, including electrical and thermal test protocols.
  • Document and present test results to stakeholders through technical reports and reliability reviews.
  • Support development of in‑house test infrastructure.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field and 4+ years relevant experience.
  • Experience with at least one of: reliability test planning, HALT/HASS, reliability‑growth, and accelerated life testing methods.
  • Experience with system‑level validation.
  • Working knowledge of reliability statistics and data analysis (Weibull, MTTF).
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, hands‑on lab and field test environment.
  • Strong clear verbal and written communication.
  • Experience developing test plans, coordinating test support requirements across multiple disciplines, and test reporting in support of precision‑guided munitions and associated systems.
  • Experience in field assignments and associated travel and operations in austere test locations.
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • We may consider candidates with fewer years of experience for a more junior role or additional experience for a more senior role.
Preferred Education, Experience & Skills
  • Experience interfacing with customers on significant technical matters.
  • Master’s degree in engineering.
  • 3–5 years of experience in component, subsystem, or reliability testing.
  • Proficiency with common test and measurement tools (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, DAQs, thermocouples, multimeters).
  • Exposure to FMEA, fault tree analysis (FTA), or similar methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Understanding of heat transfer, thermal systems, and mechanical stress testing.
  • Ability to design or adapt custom fixtures and test setups.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments methodology.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management.
