General Description / PurposeThe Environmental, Health, Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for implementing and supporting relevant environmental, health, safety, and sustainability programs within the North American organization. This includes collaborating with a team of professionals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, implementing best practices, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The EHS Specialist will work closely with front line employees and their leadership to maintain a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainability.
EssentialJob Functions
- Support the organization’s compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations within North America.
- Maintain relevant EHS programs and policies and ensure they are effectively implemented.
- Develop and facilitate comprehensive EHS training for all levels of the organization.
- Participate in incident management processes, including investigations of workplace accidents, near misses, unsafe condition reporting, and environmental incidents.
- Coordinate with other members of the EHS team to ensure consistent implementation of policies and procedures.
- Stay current with evolving regulations, industry trends, and best practices.
- Monitor for conditions affecting the organization’s EHS performance, assess effectiveness of programs, and make recommendations for improvements.
- Support sustainability initiatives to reduce the organization’s environmental footprint, promote energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and the use of sustainable materials.
Education: Associate's degree in a technical or scientific field relevant to EHS or the railroad industry.
Licenses/Certifications: Must hold or obtain within 90 days of employment and continue to maintain the following certifications:
First Aid & CPR with AED, Railroad safety training and certifications, OSHA 30 for General Industry or Construction.
Experience: 2+ years of safety experience in the maintenance of way or railroad industry.
- Working knowledge of FRA, OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and compliance tracking systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with various departments.
- Valid driver’s license and passport allowing travel to all 50 states of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
* An additional 2 years of qualifying experience may be considered as a substitute for the education requirement.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific field relevant to EHS or the railroad industry.
Licenses/Certifications: Professional safety or environmental certifications: OHST/CHST, CHMM, ASP, GSP, CSP, CIH.
