Estimator – Electric Power Division

Hooper, founded in 1913, is a respected electric power and mechanical contractor headquartered in Wisconsin with offices in Colorado, Florida, and Ohio. The role supports commercial and residential clients through high‑quality power distribution projects.
DescriptionThe Estimator is responsible for estimating assigned “Electric Power” projects (e.g., T&D powerlines and substations) and maintaining estimating systems. This role works closely with the department head to procure plans, perform material take‑offs, and manage bid schedules.
Principal Accountabilities- Develop bid schedules in consultation with the department head and procure plans for estimation.
- Prepare project estimates in a timely manner through detailed plan take‑offs, material and subcontractor pricing, and accurate bid documentation.
- Update material pricing and labor rates regularly to reflect current market changes.
- Maintain the estimating system and associated software.
- Price change orders on large projects and evaluate bid results to track pricing levels.
- Upkeep the project bid database for future reference and evaluate completed job costs against budgeted estimates to inform future estimating.
- Develop “rules of thumb” estimating techniques and criteria for budget estimating.
- Perform other general tasks at the department head’s request and attend departmental meetings and social functions.
- Minimum two years of technical education in engineering or construction management coursework, or completion of an apprenticeship in a related discipline. Prior estimating experience in the plumbing/piping industry is preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, along with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilities.
- Proficient computer skills, with a good working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and CAD/BIM drawing understanding.
- Comfortable handling a wide range of project budgets, estimating 120–200 estimates per year based on size.
- Normal office environment with occasional site visits. Requires a personal vehicle and ability to perform repetitive typing, computer use, bending, twisting, light lifting, and ladder climbing under reasonable accommodation.
- Visits construction sites in all weather conditions to survey site conditions.
