The Safety Engineer is a proactive leader who drives a culture of safety excellence and leads the implementation of innovative engineering solutions that protect people, equipment, and the environment. This individual takes ownership of safety performance across the plant by identifying risks, designing and executing effective controls, and integrating safety into all aspects of operations.

Operating in an industrial manufacturing environment that involves mechanical systems, heavy equipment, and chemical processes, the Safety Engineer provides hands‑on technical leadership to ensure the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance. This role partners closely with operations, maintenance, facilities, and engineering teams to develop and execute forward‑thinking safety strategies that not only meet compliance requirements but also enhance operational reliability and efficiency.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Drive compliance and continuous improvement by leading implementation of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable EHS regulations within industrial operations.
  • Engineer safer systems — design, evaluate, and upgrade equipment safeguards, lockout/tagout procedures, fall protection, and chemical handling processes.
  • Own contingency planning for high‑risk operations, including chemical handling, spill response, and logistics activities.
  • Lead pre‑startup safety reviews (PSSRs) and ensure all job hazard analysis (JHA) findings are implemented effectively and on schedule.
  • Take charge of incident investigations — identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and ensure lessons learned are embedded across the site.
  • Provide authoritative EHS input on all new equipment installations, process modifications, and facility upgrades to ensure safety is designed in from the start.
  • Champion collaboration with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to strengthen safety ownership and accountability at every level.
  • Lead engineering and process improvement projects that reduce risk, enhance compliance, and improve operational performance.
  • Continuously assess and refine safety programs to ensure they remain effective, practical, and aligned with site objectives.
  • Operate as a key leader in safety committees and employee engagement initiatives that empower teams to identify hazards and drive proactive risk reduction.
  • Supports the Mission of the organization and adheres to all company policies
  • Performs other duties as directed
Key Competencies
  • In‑depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.).
  • Strong technical understanding of chemical safety, ventilation systems, and industrial machinery safeguards.
  • Proficiency with EHS data management systems and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to influence and collaborate across departments and all organizational levels.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Safety, Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering required.
  • Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., ASP, CSP, CHMM, or CIH) preferred.
  • 3–5 years of EHS experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment with significant exposure to chemical processes and mechanical systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of EPA and OSHA standards, including 29 CFR 1910 and 40 CFR environmental regulations.
  • Experience leading incident investigations, root cause analyses, and safety engineering projects.
Physical Demands
  • Primarily sedentary work, involving prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and performing tasks requiring manual dexterity, such as typing and writing.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and moving around the office and production floor.
  • May require occasional lifting or carrying of light materials, typically up to 20 pounds.
