The Deputy Sheriff performs intermediate protective services with frequent exposure to high-risk situations. This position exercises independent judgment in patrolling roadways and cities within the jurisdiction, enforces statutes and ordinances, makes critical decisions, conducts general patrol, responds to emergency calls, monitors traffic, conducts investigations, prepares reports, develops community partnerships, and carries out special duties.
Responsibilities- Makes decisions independently or in consultation with supervisors at incidents or crime scenes, evaluating situations and determining the need for defensive tactics, chemical agents, firearms, and deadly force.
- Patrols state, county, township, and city streets in emergency vehicles to preserve law and order, prevent and detect crime, and monitor radio traffic.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, triaging situations to determine appropriate dispatch and controlling situations.
- Monitors vehicular traffic, enforces traffic laws, and investigates motor vehicle crashes.
- Conducts investigations, preserves crime scenes, documents evidence, and prepares search warrants and court orders.
- Prepares and records reports, exchanges information with law enforcement agencies, and corresponds with schools and other agencies.
- Controls individuals, evaluates arrest decisions, negotiates, and provides courtroom security.
- Carries out special duties such as training, defensive tactics instruction, firearms instruction, and water patrol.
- Provides credible testimony in court and represents the interests of the county and other government entities.
- Promotes a diverse, culturally competent workplace and interacts positively with internal and external customers.
- Attends work during regularly scheduled hours, trains and mentors new staff, serves civil process papers, and participates in professional development.
Minimum Requirements: Enrolled in or completed an associate/technical degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field. Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a peace officer in MN at hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field.
Physical Requirements: Frequent exertion of up to 25 lbs and occasional exertion of up to 100 lbs; standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, using hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Vision, hearing, communication, and mediation skills required. Work requires exposure to outdoor weather, wet conditions, vibration, and blood-borne pathogens. Must wear a bullet‑resistant vest.
Special Requirements: Minnesota POST license, CPR/first aid, defibrillator certification, psychological evaluation, physical exam, background check, valid driver’s license, compliance with laws and policies, firearms fingerprinting, and ongoing POST mandatory training.
Other Requirements: Access to non‑public data will be limited to what is necessary to perform duties and must be stored according to regulations.

Salary range: $33.36 to $47.14 per hour.
