Job SummaryPerforms limited Sheriff's patrol, traffic control and related law enforcement duties. Valid driver’s license in the State of Minnesota.
Requirements: 18 years of age, United States citizen, no felony or domestic assault record, HS diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license, and a telephone for call out situations. Must pass oral interview, medical screening, extensive background investigation, and satisfactorily complete a Reserve Deputy Academy. Volunteers a set number of shifts and completes Continuing Education Training yearly.

Position ObjectivePerforms limited Sheriff’s patrol, traffic control and related law enforcement duties.

- Ability to work various shifts.
- Must pass background investigation and required testing.
- Examples of duties performed by candidates include:
- Traffic control
- Thin ice marking
- Boat landing checks
- Vacation home checks
- Canine assists
- Crime prevention
- Many other tasks as assigned by Sergeants
- Works on various shifts performing security patrols, traffic control and assisting deputy sheriffs and the public on various matters.
- Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation.
- Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
- Patrols County and City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to assist Sheriff’s Deputies in preserving the peace, enforcing the law, protecting the public and controlling vehicle traffic.
- Prepares a variety of reports and records including daily log, tow sheets, theft reports, vehicle impoundment forms, traffic hazard reports etc.
- Undertakes community-oriented police work and assists citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention, traffic safety, etc.
- Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate activities and provides general information about department activities.
- Teach or assist with ATV/Snowmobile Safety classes.
- Assist with ski/snowboard/fish house theft reports.
- Assist with barking dog/dangerous dog complaints.
- Lake and River buoy placement and removal.
- Clean maintain squads at district office.
- Transport compliant adult and/or juvenile prisoners.
- Work at community or town hall events/dances.
- County Park ordinance enforcement/Parks Patrol/Sunrise Prairie Trail Patrol/Snowmobile Trail Patrol.
- Crime Prevention/Neighborhood Watch Group presentations.
- Crowd control;
Natural Disaster/Emergency Response. - Delivery of Department items; example: deliver items to BCA.
- Extended Crime Scene Perimeter control.
- K-9 Training assistance.
- Setting up the radar trailer at problem traffic areas.
- Working at school sporting events.
- Assisting in searches for lost children and missing person.
- SWAT training assists.
- Marking thin ice.
- Stand by for tows of vehicles waiting to be impounded. Filling out impound/inventory sheets.
- Assisting in traffic details/holiday and weekend traffic problems.
- Performing vehicle lockout assistance.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED and moderate experience, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Special QualificationsValid driver’s license in the State of Minnesota.
Tools and Equipment UsedSquad car; two-way radio;
Taser; handcuffs; breathalyzer; pager; first aid equipment; personal computer, including word processing software.
