Job Summary

The Retail Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists in providing safe, accurate, and timely medication services to customers. This role includes processing prescriptions, managing inventory, and operating the pharmacy register. The technician ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, assists with insurance claims and prior authorizations, maintains a clean and organized work environment, and helps customers with prescription pickups and over-the-counter product needs.

Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential. Ensure compliance with Minnesota Board of Pharmacy regulations and HIPAA requirements, while delivering excellent customer service.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Greet, assist, and communicate clearly to patients, hospital staff, and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Process prescription pickups and over-the-counter purchases using the point-of-sale (POS) system.
  • Answer phones, direct inquiries, and relay messages to pharmacists as needed.
  • Count, prepare and label medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Prepare refill requests and manage workflow queues to ensure timely dispensing.
  • Support pharmacists with administrative tasks such as filing, scanning, and labeling or other duties as assigned.
  • Support daily workflow by prioritizing tasks, communicating with the pharmacist, and managing prescription queues.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality and safety policies.
Job Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiently be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota Board of Pharmacy regulations and technician scope of practice.
  • Understanding prescription processing workflows and medication labeling requirements.
  • Ability to work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and follow detailed instructions.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills and ability to use POS systems and basic computer applications.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in handling patient and transaction information.
  • Knowledge of insurance billing processes, third-party payers, and prior authorization basics.
  • Familiarity with common pharmacy medications, dosages, and medical terminology.
  • Problem‑solving skills to troubleshoot workflow issues, insurance rejections, and inventory needs.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt to changing pharmacy demands. Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information with professional discretion.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with pharmacists, pharmacy clerks, and other interdisciplinary team members.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED; at least 18 years of age.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician MN license.
  • Must pass MN background check and fingerprinting.
  • Complete TB test within the first 3 weeks of employment.
Work Schedule
  • Shift: Monday‑Friday | 8:30 am‑5:00 pm (flex, called‑in schedule unless discussed otherwise)
