Job SummaryThe Patient Service Tech is responsible for accurately performing and processing point‑of‑care (POC) testing, venous and capillary blood collection from adults, infants, and children, and all related functions.
Responsibilities- Collect blood and/or perform POC as assigned.
- Clean and restock POC supplies and prepare phlebotomy carts/trays.
- Assist coworkers with draws and POC testing.
- Draw venous or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric patients using proper aseptic collection techniques.
- Draw and deliver (where applicable) all blood work (stat, timed, routine) within established departmental policy time frames.
- Draw venous and capillary blood into proper tubes and culture vials according to the purpose for which the blood is to be tested.
- Perform and process all POC tests on patients ranging from newborn to geriatrics.
- Complete clerical functions associated with POC testing documents.
- Report incidents/issues regarding patients or employees timely to group leader or supervisor.
- Report supply needs and equipment defects in a timely fashion.
- Log refrigerator temperatures daily and report if out of range to group leader or supervisor.
- Travel and perform phlebotomy duties and POC testing, as needed, at health fairs and PSA testing sites and deliver specimens to laboratory.
- Identify the needs of the patient population served and modify and deliver care that is specific to those needs (e.g., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired).
- Communicate with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Adhere to the standards identified in the clinic’s Organizational Competencies.
- Lift light to moderately heavy objects (1–15 lbs frequently; 16–25 lbs occasionally; 26–40 lbs seldom; >41 lbs without assistance).
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods; requires long hours of eye and hand coordination.
- Must perform repetitive tasks frequently with dominant hand.
- Position requires travel.
- Extensive use of phone and PC.
- Fine dexterity with hands/steadiness.
- Talking, walking, balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching/twisting.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Medical training: medical assistant or paramedic training preferred.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred (required in California, Nevada, and Washington).
