As a Field Service Technician‑Network Specialist
, you will have overall responsibility for maintaining a highly reliable network of systems including the central office switch, carrier and transmission equipment, fiber electronics, business communication systems, and all other auxiliary equipment. Responsibilities include installation, maintenance and repair of network infrastructure and circuits, digital switch devices and cross‑connects, and technical support for telecommunications products such as Key Systems, PBX, Centrex, and other business systems.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and/or other TDS products for new and existing customers. Identifies location of defective cable using test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, and customer cable. Keeps orderly log of all locate requests.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and maintains central office equipment including switch, operating software, and auxiliary equipment. Provides functional support and answers questions about features and functions.
  • Provides advanced troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Responds to “trouble” dispatches.
  • Provides high‑level support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements).
  • Provides excellent customer service, proactively educating and selling TDS products and services.
  • Performs project management for system installations and performs related functions as requested by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years technical telecommunications experience – OR – current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing, repair, installation, or switch training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follows TDS attendance guidelines for business needs.
Other Qualifications
  • Must successfully complete customer‑specific background check and safety course curriculum.
  • Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities; may require occasional travel and overtime.
  • Ability to maintain DOT requirements for vehicles with GVRW >10,000 lbs.
  • Understanding of telecommunications products and services (inside wiring, internet, grounding, data & computers, fiber optics, cabling, structured wiring, video, inventory systems, battery maintenance, PBX, Centrex, voicemail, etc.).
  • Practical knowledge of computer applications, including MS Office and plant record systems.
  • Independent decision maker with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills; effective verbal and written communications.
  • Organizational, multitasking abilities.
  • Physical requirements:

    operation of heavy construction machinery, digging, lifting, climbing.
  • May require occasional travel and swing shift work.
  • Ability to operate manual transmission vehicles.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Regularly required to sit, stand, write, and operate a computer. Frequently moves, reaches, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, balances, and climbs. Frequently lifts up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs. Involves exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment in outdoor or mechanical rooms; may encounter extreme weather conditions.
