Position Details

The work is a full-time Seasonal Laborer, Trades & Equipment position located in Park Rapids, MN. The work schedule is 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. Minnesota State Parks and Trails supports the Bemidji Area Parks and Trails office, covering several counties. The position assists the Area Supervisor and staff in managing and directing operations of Parks and Trails facilities and in daily facility development and maintenance near Bemididj and Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Normal anticipated season dates are approximately April 6 through November 5.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, construct and service Parks and Trails administered sites and facilities to provide safe, high-quality facilities for public use.
  • Apply technical knowledge in development and maintenance of sites and facilities to ensure safety and quality.
  • Perform routine inspections and repairs on equipment to maintain safe operating conditions.
  • Operate heavy equipment to construct and service Parks and Trails recreation facilities.
  • Collect, record, and report information on equipment, facilities, and work performed to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Represent Parks and Trails and DNR by providing information to the public.
  • Complete safety and other job-related training; ensure accountability for safe performance.
  • Uphold safety procedures to reduce injuries and equipment damage.
  • Complete other duties as assigned to meet department objectives.
Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a Class A license, passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Otherwise, qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to 6 months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.

  • Knowledge and/or experience in methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trades work and construction.
  • Knowledge and/or experience safely operating light, medium & heavy motorized equipment (e.g., pickups, ATVs, dump trucks, tractors, trailers, watercraft, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, auger, and power/hand tools).
  • Ability to service, perform minor repairs and make adjustments to tools and equipment, including general building maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal directions; communicate and carry out assignments safely and efficiently.
  • Strength, agility, and endurance to perform tasks in extreme environmental conditions and in remote locations.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to solve problems independently.
  • Ability to communicate orally with staff/visitors.
  • Ability to uphold the DNR Culture of Respect.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current possession of Class A license.
  • Two years of experience in equipment operation and maintenance of related equipment.
  • Two years of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance of larger equipment.
  • Technical school certificates, licensure, or degrees in related fields (heavy equipment operation, carpentry, construction, electrical repair, etc.).
  • Knowledge of civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning as related to recreation facility design and construction.
  • Experience in natural resource management fields such as parks, forestry, wildlife management, hydrology.
  • Experience providing lead work direction/assigning tasks.
Additional Requirements
  • Current possession of a valid Class A license or ability to obtain one within 6 months.
