Job Summary

Responsibilities include:

develop and implement cheer routines, foster team spirit, and promote a positive and supportive environment for student‑athletes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coaching and Training:
    • Plan, organize, and conduct cheer practices focusing on skill development, team coordination, and performance preparation.
    • Teach and reinforce cheer techniques, safety protocols, and conditioning exercises.
    • Develop and choreograph sideline cheers, halftime performances, and routines for pep rallies, parades, and school events.
    • Works, plans, and communicates effectively with assistant coaches during the season.
  • Game Day Responsibilities:
    • Supervise cheerleaders before and during games, ensuring they maintain high energy and support for the teams.
    • Coordinate logistics for cheerleading at home and away games, including Section and State tournaments, managing logistics of transportation, meals, lodging, and equipment.
  • Team Management:
    • Recruit, select, and manage a diverse and inclusive cheer team.
    • Foster a positive team culture emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and school spirit.
    • Conduct regular evaluations of cheerleaders' performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Communicate effectively with parents, school staff, and the athletic department regarding schedules, expectations, and team needs.
    • Ensure all team members meet academic and eligibility requirements.
    • Manage the cheerleading rosters, attendance, schedule, and budget, including ordering uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
    • Complete required paperwork for travel, transportation, orders, coaches evaluations, and end‑of‑season paperwork.
    • Understanding of Google Suite for administrative duties is preferred.
    • Maintain MSHSL Coaches Dashboard: complete Continuing Education Requirements (CERs), Annual Requirements, seasonal Emergency Action Plans, and team information and photos.
    • Uphold school student and athletic policies.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Maintain a safe environment by ensuring all cheer activities comply with school policies and relevant safety standards.
    • Stay updated on the latest cheerleading techniques and safety protocols through continuous professional development.
  • Qualifications:
    • Cheer coaches in Minnesota are NOT required to meet the State Statute Requirement to be a Head Coach in Minnesota. In addition, all head cheerleading coaches who wish to have their sideline cheerleaders stunt must complete the NFHS Online Cheer and Dance Safety Certification Course (Formerly ACCAA and Stunt Progression 1). If you have never taken the ACCAA safety in‑person Stunt Progression 1 course, you must complete the new combined Cheer and Dance Safety Certification course at  before allowing your athletes to stunt.

      Coaches who have previously completed AACCA and Stunt Progression 1: if you have previously completed these two courses, you will have one calendar year to complete the new Cheer and Dance Safety Certification Course at  This course is required of Head Cheer Coaches and must be renewed once every four years.
    • Previous cheerleading coaching experience, preferably at the high school level.
    • Strong knowledge of cheerleading techniques, stunts, and routines.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
    • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
    • A commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive team environment.
    • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Must be available for after‑school practices, evening games, and occasional weekend events.
    • Ability to work in various weather conditions during outdoor events.
    • Physical ability to demonstrate cheer techniques and participate in physical activities.
