Apex Engineering Group has openings for Lead Engineering Technicians. Locations are flexible and can be performed from any Apex office or via hybrid. The role is a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction. Lead Engineering Technicians will independently contribute to design and development of project plans using CADD skills and serve as Chief Inspector on construction projects.
They typically report to a Project Manager or senior team member. Additional responsibilities may include materials testing and inspection with concrete and asphalt operations during construction, support survey crews, and train junior staff.
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or Technical Degree in Drafting is highly desirable (applicable experience may be accepted).
- 5 to 10 years of experience with basic civil engineering design and construction inspection principles preferred.
- Proficient with CADD platforms such as Bentley Open Roads Designer, Micro Station Connect, Autocad, and Civil 3D.
- Proficient with Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Material testing experience with current MnDOT technical certifications desired, or ability to attain these skills and certifications promptly.
- Working knowledge of MnDOT’s AASHTOWARE system to enter daily work reports.
- Willingness to work in teams, strong communication, organizational and self‑motivation.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Work in various weather conditions and terrains on construction sites.
- May require prolonged periods of standing and walking while performing construction observation, material testing, and surveying.
- Must work scheduled and required hours.
- Required to lift and move objects or containers weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Prepare detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts from rough sketches, redline corrections, and topographic surveys using CADD software such as Micro Station GEOPAK, Open Roads Designer, AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Calculate dimensions, square footage, profiles of roadway and utilities, material quantities using computer programs.
- Follow company and client CADD standards and procedures.
- Execute multiple tasks assigned by Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Senior Technicians to develop project plans and specifications.
- Assist with and develop skills in construction observation, inspection, surveying, and material testing.
- Act as resident project representative (RPR) or owner’s representative during construction projects.
- Communicate with contractors to handle difficult and time‑sensitive situations.
- Communicate regularly with Apex and State/County Agency Project Managers to report progress and potential issues.
- Document construction progress and quantities in field diaries and input data into automated record systems.
- Attend company, project and client meetings in person, via teleconference, or remote video conference.
- Understand and follow company safety policies and employee handbook.
- Perform responsibilities with a strong attention to detail and legal/ethical conduct.
- Work independently and in a team environment.
- Participate in training to develop communication, technical and organizational skills.
- Travel and overnight stays may be required; overtime during construction season may be expected.

Hourly Base Pay Range: $35 – $50. Actual base pay is dependent on several factors, including experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity.
