Position: School Counselor (9-12)

In July 2019, Compass Community Schools opened six high-quality charter schools (five elementary and one middle/high) in the Memphis communities of Binghampton, Berclair, Frayser, Hickory Hill, Midtown, and Orange Mound. We focus intently on three pillars – academic excellence, values-based character education, and service learning in the community – as we prepare our students for college and life‑long success.

Position Overview

Compass Community Schools is seeking an experienced school social worker at our 9-12 high school in Midtown for the  school year.

  • Intentionally small school settings – Midtown High School has less than 400 students in total, and the caseload is shared with a full-time school Counselor
  • Multiple student supports available – Midtown High School is staffed with a Dean of Students (who supports student behaviors and attendance/truancy work)
  • Collaborative professional development (PLCs) supported by a network-level Director of Student Services, as well as network-level content leads
  • Robust medical, dental, and vision plan with significant employer contributions to premiums

  • Contributions in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (AAA‑rated pension plan)
  • Salary ranges from $50,000 to $60,000
Primary Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement the school’s SEL program, focused on improving students’ academic, social, and emotional skills
  • Lead students individually and in groups to develop and strengthen their social‑emotional skills
  • Provide students with emotional and cognitive regulation skills and techniques as needed to help them successfully navigate challenging circumstances.
  • Refer students and families to various school, district, and community service providers as needed
  • Educate on the CASEL SEL Competencies and trauma‑informed practices, which support the equity and dignity of our students
  • Support and contribute to a school‑wide focus on three pillars: academic excellence, values‑based character education, and service learning in the community.
  • Establish a supportive, joyful, and hopeful culture that has high expectations for students’ individual and collective success.
  • Provide mediation for students as needed to help them successfully navigate challenging circumstances.
  • Administer assessments to determine students’ academic, social, and emotional strengths and areas of need.
  • Analyze various data to help inform students’ counseling needs.
  • Refer students and families to various school, district, and community service providers as needed.
  • Carefully monitor students’ educational plans and progress in collaboration with staff and service providers.
  • Communicate regularly with families as partners in the education of their children.
  • Carefully manage students’ confidential files.

Qualifications
  • REQUIRED: valid Tennessee teaching license (preferred endorsement #487)
