Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Meet state certification requirements
  • Minimum 48 college hours

Primary Purpose

Provide for the physical, behavioral and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist in the implementation of individual education plans, including self-help, communication, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal/strategist/specialist and the immediate direction of a certified teacher. Provide assistance to the bus driver in loading and unloading students who are in wheelchairs or who cannot use the bus steps.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assists under the supervision of the Special Education teacher with the arrival and departure of students.
  • Prepares for classroom activities under the direction of the Special Education teacher. Keeps classroom displays acceptable, keeps classroom clean, has instructional materials ready to use as needed by teacher.
  • Works with individual or small groups of students to reinforce lessons/activities initially introduced by the teacher and to assist with classroom experiments, demonstrations, etc.
  • Assists with any remedial drills, reading or storytelling while keeping accurate records of student progress and performance.
  • Helps students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs and personal hygiene.
  • Helps manage behavior of students and implements behavior change programs. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining a student who becomes a danger to himself/herself and others.
  • Assists and intervenes in situations such as prevention of self-abusive and aggressive behaviors through use of District Crisis Management training.
  • Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs. Provides feedback to students on their programs.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with students.
  • Works with assigned students or small groups to develop social motor skills, conducts exercise activities assigned by the teacher or implements structured communication or behavioral programming as designed.
  • Assists assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside classroom including lunchroom, bus, and playground.
  • Assists students during transition from class to class.
  • Keeps teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
  • Keeps documentation of students’ medical procedures, behavior patterns, etc.
  • Participates in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Maintains a positive working environment in the classroom and campus.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned by Special Education teacher.
  • Performs duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling, frequent heavy lifting of students. Assisting students in feeding. Changing students when soiled. Possible physical restraint.

Equipment Used

Wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, feeding tubes, use of bus ramps. Use of structured communication systems.
