Help meet physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a self‑contained classroom. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self‑help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervisor of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Meet state certification requirements
- Minimum 48 college hours
- Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for the work to be performed.

- Assist under the supervision of the Special Education teacher with the arrival and departure of students.
- Prepare for classroom activities under the direction of the Special Education teacher. Keep classroom displays acceptable, keep classroom clean, have instructional materials ready to use as needed by teacher.
- Work with individual or small groups of handicapped students to reinforce lessons/activities initially introduced by the teacher and to assist with classroom experiments, demonstrations, etc.
- Assist with any remedial drills, reading or storytelling keeping accurate records of student progress and performance.
- Help students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs and personal hygiene.
- Help manage behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining a student who becomes a danger to himself/herself and others.
- Assist and intervene in situations such as prevention of self‑abusive and aggressive behaviors through use of District Crisis Management training.
- Help students follow teachers’ instructions through physical management such as prevention of self‑abusive and/or aggressive behaviors in which students may engage.
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs.
- Work with assigned student or small group of students to develop Fine/Gross and social motor skills, and conduct exercise activities assigned by the teacher.
- Assist assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside classroom including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Assist students during transition from class to class.
- Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
- Keep documentation of students’ medical procedures, behavior patterns, etc.
- Participate in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform other work‑related duties as assigned by Special Education teacher.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
- Constant walking, standing, and movement to ensure safety and well‑being of students in large open areas such as playgrounds, gyms, football fields, shop areas, etc.
- Physical activity, modeling, and directing instruction in front of large group settings of students in order to define/model expected and appropriate behaviors.
- Lifting, carrying, or pulling of instructional equipment such as balls, instruments, cases, tools, etc. which are necessary to the instructional delivery of the lesson.
- Exposure to various climate settings and temperatures relative to classroom instruction within/outside school building/facility.
Equipment used:
Wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts, feeding tubes, use of bus ramps. Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; for P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED).
Posture:
Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion:
Frequent walking.
Lifting:
Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment.
Environment:
Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise.
Mental Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.
