Assistant Project Manager – Rail Station Expansion (Civil / M&E)
Job Description
This role supports the delivery of a complex rail station expansion project, including an extension of an existing station and a pedestrian bridge, within a live rail environment. The Assistant Project Manager will work closely with an experienced civil Project Manager to coordinate construction activities, manage documentation, and ensure work proceeds safely and efficiently around active tracks and station operations. This position is ideal for a field-oriented professional who is comfortable in rail settings, understands mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, and is ready to take ownership of project tasks from day one.
Responsibilities
Support the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and executing an extension of an existing rail station and associated pedestrian bridge.
Work effectively within a live rail environment, coordinating construction activities around active tracks and operational station facilities.
Prepare, issue, and track Requests for Information (RFIs) to clarify design intent and resolve site issues in a timely manner.
Prepare, process, and monitor change orders, ensuring accurate documentation of scope changes and their impact on schedule and cost.
Review and interpret construction drawings and specifications, with particular focus on M&E components, to support field execution.
Coordinate with field crews, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure work aligns with project plans, safety requirements, and quality standards.
Communicate confidently and professionally with key contacts, including internal teams and external stakeholders, using verbal, written, and electronic channels.
Assist in monitoring project progress, identifying issues or risks in a live work setting, and supporting the development of mitigation plans.
Support site-based problem solving, helping to integrate civil, structural, and M&E work in a constrained rail environment.
Contribute to project documentation and reporting, including updates related to RFIs, change orders, and field activities.
Demonstrate a proactive, hands-on approach, stepping into new tasks and responsibilities as needed to keep the project moving forward.
Essential Skills
7–10 years of experience in project management, construction, or construction management roles.
Proven experience working in a rail environment, including familiarity with working around active tracks and rail operations.
Mechanical and electrical (M&E) experience in a construction setting.
Experience working in a live work environment where trains and station facilities remain operational during construction.
Demonstrated ability to prepare, process, and track RFIs.
Demonstrated ability to prepare, process, and track change orders.
Strong ability to read, interpret, and work from construction drawings and specifications.
Effective communication skills, with confidence interacting with key contacts verbally, in writing, and via electronic communication.
Field-based construction experience, such as experience as a Field Engineer, Project Engineer, Superintendent, or Project Manager.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation is a strong asset.
Experience on rail projects involving station expansions, platforms, or pedestrian bridges is an advantage.
Experience in civil construction with exposure to building or M&E scopes is beneficial.
Comfort working closely with an experienced Project Manager and taking on increasing responsibility over time.
Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to "hit the ground running" in a complex, live rail environment.
Work Environment
This is a fully on-site role, Monday to Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., based on active project locations. Work takes place in a live rail environment where trains and station operations remain active during construction, requiring heightened attention to safety, coordination, and communication.
