Summer Academy Faculty (Term Role) – Vanguard Scholars Program

About Vanguard ScholarsVanguard Scholars is a national, multi-year academic and leadership pathway supporting high-achieving Black students through postsecondary education. The program combines academic enrichment, mentorship, leadership development, and a Summer Academy delivered with leading Canadian universities. The Academy is an intensive (6 weeks) experience designed to strengthen academic readiness, critical thinking, and confidence.
The Summer Academy Faculty delivers university-preparatory instruction in mathematics or writing, advancing students’ academic skills and readiness for postsecondary success. This role is suited for experienced educators committed to rigorous teaching in a collaborative, high-impact environment.

Program Team
- Deliver a university-preparatory course aligned with curriculum and academic standards
- Design engaging instruction combining lectures, discussion, and applied learning
- Maintain high academic rigor and adapt teaching to student needs
- Complete all preparation in advance of program start
- Administer and evaluate pre- and post-assessments
- Provide timely, clear, and constructive feedback
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Prepare final evaluations reflecting performance and growth
- Writing faculty: guide students through development of a polished personal statement or application-style essay
- Hold regular office hours (up to 4 hours/week) and provide academic support
- Foster a classroom environment that promotes curiosity, participation, and confidence
- Provide mentorship supporting postsecondary readiness
- Supervise and support assigned Teaching Assistant
- Delegate tasks aligned with instructional goals
- Complete grading, reporting, and deliverables on time
- Contribute to end-of-program evaluation
- Communicate student progress and concerns to leadership
- Use required platforms (Canvas, Google Classroom, Slack)
- Maintain accurate records of student work, grades, and feedback
- Attend all program components including training, instruction, and meetings
- Adhere to schedules and program requirements
- Work closely with program leadership, faculty, and staff
- Maintain a professional, respectful environment
- Provide consistent, high-quality feedback
- Support student progress through office hours and meetings
- Contribute to final evaluations
- Complete onboarding and preparation requirements
- Deliver instruction with flexibility and responsiveness
- Contribute to program evaluation and improvement
- Support program delivery as needed

University of Toronto (St. George Campus) - Program Dates:
July 6 – August 14, 2026 - Training:
June 2026 (virtual and on-site) - Full-time seasonal role teaching one course (up to 30 students)
- Classes run Monday–Friday, 2 hours 45 minutes daily
- Supported by one Teaching Assistant
- Writing:
Creative/Expository Writing;
Academic Writing - Mathematics:
Pre-Calculus, Calculus I/II, Multi-variable Calculus, Statistics
- 35–45 hours/week, Monday–Friday
- Includes:
- Instruction: ~13.75 hours/week
- Prep: ~10–15 hours/week
- Grading: ~6–10 hours/week
- Office hours: up to 4 hours/week
- Meetings & coordination: ~2–4 hours/week
