Numeracy for University and Beyond
This course teaches quantitative literacy and numeracy skills in order to develop core competencies identified as essential for university and beyond. ISP
130H5 enhances students’ ability and confidence to engage with quantitative information in a variety of contexts, by applying mathematical, statistical, and computational approaches to make informed decisions, to problem-solve, to effectively communicate and express quantitative information, and to create logical, evidence-based arguments. Rather than focusing on math specific skills, the course explores relevant concepts as they appear in diverse disciplines and authentic real-life situations, such as numbers and magnitude, patterns and relationships, financial literacy, health, probabilistic reasoning, chance and risk, and interpreting data presented in various forms.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, Data Science, Science and Technology Studies, or a related field with demonstrated expertise in quantitative literacy and numeracy.
  • A minimum of one year of experience teaching at the university or college level.
  • Demonstrated quantitative reasoning, numeracy, statistical literacy, data interpretation, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching students to apply quantitative approaches to problem-solving, decision-making, and evidence-based argumentation across diverse contexts.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with first-year university students.
  • Demonstrated experience working with multilingual university students.
  • Description of Duties:

  • Attending up to 10 hours of onboarding and professional development meetings.
  • Teaching in-person weekly classes.
  • Marking student assignments (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials).
  • Submitting grades to university officials.
  • Holding regular in-person office hours.
