Description:
Diagnostic assessment of written assignments for foundational first‑year writing course.
Positions: Up to 4 positions available in Fall 2026 and up to 4 positions available in Winter 2027
Estimated Course Enrolment: Up to 1500 students across all sections each term.
Schedule:
Training and benchmarking as well as assessments will take place in early May.
Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 8-15, 2026 for Fall;
January 6-13, 2027 for Winter.
Hours:
Up to 5 hours of training and benchmarking and up to 50 hours of assessment work (workload dependent). Additional hours may be negotiated during the remainder of the academic year on a discretionary basis.
Writing Instructor I: $53.41/hr
Writing Instructor I – Long Term: $56.07/hr
Writing Instructor II: $57.42/hr
Writing Instructor II – Long Term: $58.58/hr
Writing Instructor II (priority): $59.11/hr
Writing Instructor II (priority) – Long Term: $60.29/hr
The rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail if they differ from those stated above.
Minimum Qualifications
A master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education, Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition) with strong writing and oral communication skills.
TESL certification or equivalent.
Demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and ability to work as part of a team.
Flexible availability is a requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
A doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline.
Familiarity with advanced second‑language education practices and/or experience as an assessor of second and/or additional language student writing.
Demonstrated experience working with first‑year university students and/or multilingual writers.
Description of Duties
Meet with Principal Investigator and team of assessors for benchmarking session.
Perform diagnostic assessments of individual written assignments.
Record and report results in a timely manner.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals at the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto covered by CUPE 3902 Unit 1 should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
