Senior Specialist Engineer – Hydrometallurgy

Location:

Sheridan Park, Mississauga. Permanent onsite position.

Role Overview
  • Apply broad and specialized knowledge in applied science and engineering (chemistry, chemical or materials engineering) to support hydrometallurgy technology excellence in Vale Base Metals global operations and growth projects.
  • Act as a recognized technical authority in one or more areas of hydrometallurgy processing and provide expert analysis and consultation on complex technical matters.
  • Plan, lead, and execute technical investigation and R&D projects to identify, demonstrate, and implement solutions for process metallurgy challenges and opportunities for current and future operations.
  • Oversee the selection, design, fabrication, and assembly of required laboratory and mini‑plant test work equipment.
  • Lead the planning and safe execution of laboratory and mini‑plant test work programs, prepare technical reports and presentations, communicate key results, significance and implications to broader internal stakeholders, and recommend next steps.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of results‑driven recommendations in Vale’s operating plants or for the next stage of development for growth projects.
  • Provide ongoing technical expert assistance to Operations in Vale Base Metals plants; maintain regular communication with key personnel.
  • Participate in process technical peer reviews, critical process safety reviews and other company‑wide initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of best‑in‑class process technology developments and make recommendations for assessment for potential adoption in operations; develop and maintain a network of contacts with technology and equipment vendors, engineering companies, universities, and other technical institutions.
  • Provide mentorship and professional guidance to junior technical personnel.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Undergraduate degree in Chemical or Materials Engineering required;
    Graduate Degree (MSc or PhD) preferred.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of hydrometallurgy technologies development and implementation in hydrometallurgical operations.
  • Skills:
    • Advanced hydrometallurgy expertise across multiple areas, including leadership of multi‑stage test work programs, complex experimental design, and execution at laboratory, mini‑plant, demonstration plant and commercial plant scale.
    • Strong data analysis, technical reporting, and interpretation skills, with the ability to identify risks, opportunities, and constraints and define follow‑up test work programs.
    • Ability to lead others as well as work independently.
    • Team participation and team building; develop and maintain relationships across the organization.
    • Demonstrated creativity in addressing complex, non‑routine challenges; capability to recognize common issues across sites and drive adoption of scalable solutions.
    • Technology champion and a driver for change; independent, proactive working style with a continuous focus on emerging technologies and best practices.
    • Trusted advisor to operations, recognized as the “go‑to” expert in several specialized process technology or equipment areas.

Pay Grade: F2T
Minimum Starting Salary: $130,000
