Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly motivated intermediate Geotechnical Engineer with experience in tailings dam design for tailings management projects across Canada and elsewhere. This role emphasizes technical aptitude and project execution to ensure technical excellence and compliance with regulatory standards in tailings management. The position may be based in any of AECOM’s Canadian offices.
Responsibilities Technical Leadership- Design, analyze, and oversee construction of tailings dams, embankments, and related infrastructure.
- Conduct geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, seepage, liquefaction, and settlement evaluations.
- Perform risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for tailings facilities, addressing challenges such as seepage, slope stability, liquefaction, and water management.
- Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, and specifications to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Ensure all projects meet or exceed regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and sustainability goals.
- Serve as a Deputy Engineer of Record for tailings dam projects, with a career progression into future EOR responsibilities.
- Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
- Provide technical reviews and guidance to ensure the quality and consistency of project deliverables.
- Stay updated on evolving regulatory frameworks and industry guidelines, ensuring AECOM remains at the forefront of compliance.
- Advocate for best practices in tailings management within industry associations and regulatory bodies, contributing to the advancement of the field.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, focusing on tailings dam design and management.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada, or eligibility to obtain licensure within 3 months.
- Proven experience as a Deputy Engineer of Record for at least 2 tailings dams.
- Proficiency in engineering design software for embankments and tailings dams.
- Experience with advanced numerical modeling techniques and software.
- Strong understanding of Canadian regulatory frameworks and industry guidelines (e.g., GISTM, CDA, ICMM, MAC).
- 10+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, with a strong focus on tailings dam design and management.
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Advanced numerical modeling proficiency.
- Robust project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to lead and inspire teams.
- Ability to communicate proficiently in both English and French is an advantage.
Sponsorship for Canadian employment authorization is not available for this position.
All newly hired employees are required to attend an in‑person Day1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
CompensationThe range for this position is $110,000 to $160,000 CAD yearly, based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
