This position is for an existing vacancy.

Location

Mississauga or Markham, ON (can be based in any GTA office: Toronto, Mississauga, Markham or Whitby).

Overview

The Tunnel Group is an energetic dynamic team working on tunnelling projects for large‑diameter subway transit lines in the GTA, municipal projects in Ontario, pursuits in Vancouver and subway lines in Australia.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with project work within GHD’s Rail and Transportation business and support other tunnelling projects across Canada or internationally, as opportunities present.
  • Respond to technical and administrative tasks associated with the development of tunnels and stations.
  • Carry out analysis for tunnel liners and shaft design using PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience, etc., as directed by senior members of the team.
  • Prepare tunnel reports for the tunnel component of proposals.
  • Attend client meetings along with supervisor.
  • Collect and analyze data using preset tools, methods, and formats.
  • Provide complex analysis and interpretation of geological/geophysical field data for well proposals.
  • Utilise advanced modelling techniques.
  • Assist with reservoir characterization and simulation, compiling reservoir engineering data and analysing it.
  • Contribute to engineering solutions design and feasibility testing of proposed engineering solutions.
  • Implement knowledge‑management policies, collect best practices and participate in internal knowledge‑sharing sessions.
  • Support data‑management systems by providing advice and assistance.
  • Recommend technical developments to improve quality of software and supporting infrastructure.
  • Develop personal capabilities through training, coaching, and professional accreditation where relevant.
  • Maintain understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education.
  • Support technical troubleshooting efforts for equipment and experiments.
  • Conduct research activities to support others or fulfill role requirements.
  • Work within an established project‑management plan to achieve specific goals.
  • Design exploration programmes, including risk assessment and budgeting.
  • Assist senior colleagues in managing client and customer relationships using relevant sales or client systems.
Qualifications
  • Experience working within tunnel design or construction teams.
  • Experience designing large‑diameter tunnels (≥6m).
  • Ability to design deep shaft and shoring structures.
  • Experience designing tunnels in soft ground and transit underground support structures.
  • Proficiency with analytical and numerical analysis methods and industry‑standard geotechnical software (PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience).
  • Knowledge of tunnelling and shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment and methodology selection.
  • Experience calculating tunnel‑induced settlement and analysing damage to adjacent infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with settlement instrumentation and monitoring.
  • Tunnelling construction experience with TBMs and precast linings.
  • Experience with soft ground tunnelling ancillaries, including ground treatment and ground freezing.
  • Familiarity with preparation of GBRs and review of GDRs, and geotechnical investigation planning for tunnel and underground structures.
  • Ability to prepare PSOS specifications.
  • Familiarity with cost estimating and scheduling for tunnel/shaft construction.
  • Experience preparing detailed design reports and construction reporting.
  • Excellent technical writing, presentation and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to assist in project pursuits and proposal writing.
  • University graduate with a degree in geotechnical, geological or civil engineering (Master’s in Tunnel/Geotechnical Engineering considered an asset).
  • Professional status essential, or working towards it.
  • Proven experience in tunnel engineering, transportation and rail projects.
  • Minimum of 8years of post‑graduate experience on tunnel and underground projects.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence (ClassG).
  • Salary range: $91,400 to $141,000.

The salary range for this position is $91,400 to $141,000. This range represents the expected hiring range for GHD locations in its major city centers. Salaries may vary for positions in other locations. Base salary is determined by your skills, experience, qualifications and work location. GHD offers competitive compensation and adheres to all relevant pay‑transparency legislation.
