Job Title:
Piping Designer
Job Description
This role focuses on performing piping and equipment layout in a 3D model environment using Smart Plant 3D (Smart 3D) for complex industrial projects, including nuclear and other EPC environments. The piping designer works both independently and under the guidance of design engineers to create new piping and equipment layouts, modify existing systems, and develop detailed engineering design drawings. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a major new reactor build, working at the front end of innovative nuclear technology and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Responsibilities
Perform piping and equipment layout in a 3D CAD environment using Smart Plant 3D (Smart 3D) for process piping, equipment, instrument tubing, and supports.Prepare intermediate-complexity 2D drawings from verbal or written instructions, ensuring accuracy and clarity.Develop design layout drawings and select appropriate material specifications in accordance with project and industry standards.Prepare pre-design sketches, schematics, and other drawings based on general written or verbal instructions and field inspections.Carry out revisions to drawings of equipment and installations using verbal information or rough sketches, maintaining design integrity and consistency.Create general arrangement drawings, detailed drawings, and piping isometrics from Smart Plant 3D models.Use Smart Plant P& (Smart Plant PID) to develop and maintain system flowsheets that align with project requirements.Work within an EPC environment to support piping and equipment layout for projects in sectors such as oil and gas, mining, nuclear, and power generation.Ensure all deliverables meet defined quality standards and project schedule requirements.Interface effectively with clients, engineers, and other design and drafting professionals to coordinate design activities and resolve technical issues.Apply mechanical engineering or technologist principles to support piping design, P&t, and mechanical layout tasks.Support nuclear-related projects by applying knowledge of nuclear industry requirements and standards where applicable.Essential Skills
Minimum 5+ years of experience using Smart Plant 3D (Smart 3D) for modelling process piping, equipment, instrument tubing, and piping/tubing supports.Proven experience creating general arrangement drawings, detailed drawings, and piping isometrics from Smart Plant 3D models.Experience using Smart Plant P& (Smart Plant PID) for the creation of system flowsheets.Experience in an EPC environment with hands-on piping and equipment layout experience, ideally in sectors such as oil and gas, mining, nuclear, or power generation.Ability to prepare 2D drawings, pre-design sketches, schematics, and design layouts from verbal or written instructions and field inspections.Strong capability to revise and update drawings of equipment and installations from verbal information or rough sketches.Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Engineering Technologist education or equivalent experience in mechanical/piping design.Demonstrated ability to meet quality and schedule requirements on multiple concurrent projects.Effective communication skills to interface with clients and cross-functional engineering groups.Eligibility to obtain and maintain security clearance, including permanent residency with at least 5 years of residence in Canada, as required by project security standards.Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in nuclear industry projects or nuclear facility design.Familiarity with Solid Works for mechanical or piping design tasks.Experience using AutoCAD for 2D drafting and drawing production.Exposure to P&t and piping isometric generation beyond Smart Plant 3D environments.Previous experience working on large-scale reactor or powerplant projects.Strong interest in learning and applying new technologies and standards in nuclear and EPC environments.Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including designers, drafters, engineers, and technical specialists.Comfort working in structured, procedure-driven environments with extensive technical documentation and standards.Work Environment
The role is primarily office-based in a design and engineering environment, with a preferred location in Mississauga. Team members typically work a 37.5-hour work week and are expected to be in the office three days per week, supporting a hybrid-style arrangement. You will work extensively with Smart Plant 3D, Smart Plant PID, and other CAD tools such as Solid Works and AutoCAD, leveraging a large archive of technical documentation and design records to support your work.
The culture emphasizes both technical excellence and collaboration, with clusters of workstations that intentionally mix highly experienced professionals with mid-career and early-career designers to foster knowledge transfer and mentorship. The environment is professional yet social, with…
