Position: Mechatronics Engineering Specialist Engineering Ontario (Shop & Field Based)

Horizon Legacy is building next-generation construction automation systems that combine robotics, industrial automation, and advanced manufacturing to transform how buildings are designed, fabricated, and delivered.

As we transition from prototype development to low-volume production, we're looking for a hands-on Mechatronics Engineering Specialist to take ownership of complete automation systems—from design through field deployment.

Position Summary

The Mechatronics Engineering Specialist is responsible for designing, building, programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuously improving construction automation systems.

This role supports the complete product lifecycle:

You'll work in both the shop and the field, supporting robotic construction systems operating in real-world environments.

Key Responsibilities Mechanical Engineering
  • Design machine structures, motion systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Create detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
  • Build and assemble prototypes and production equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement design improvements.
  • Support equipment testing, commissioning, and field deployment.
  • Work with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Help establish manufacturing processes for low-volume production.
Electrical & Controls Engineering
  • Design electrical systems, control panels, and wiring architectures.
  • Develop electrical drawings using NFPA and IEC standards.
  • Program and commission PLCs, HMIs, motion control systems, and machine automation.
  • Integrate industrial PCs, VFDs, sensors, servo systems, safety systems, and industrial networks.
  • Develop standardized electrical documentation and control system designs.
  • Improve machine reliability, quality, and safety through automation.
Production Support
  • Support robotic system integration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and field deployment.
  • Diagnose PLC, HMI, network, and electrical control issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain control system documentation and backups.
  • Collaborate with vendors and system integrators on equipment improvements.
  • Identify risks related to automation systems and recommend improvements.
Qualifications Education
  • Degree or Diploma in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
  • 5+ years of automation, controls, robotics, or manufacturing experience.
  • 5+ years designing industrial equipment or automation systems.
  • Experience supporting production equipment and field commissioning.
Technical Skills

Experience with :
  • PLC programming (Allen-Bradley Control Logix / Compact Logix, Studio 5000)
  • CAD and 3D modelling
  • Electrical design and control panels (UL 508A)
  • Industrial networking (Ether Net/IP, Modbus, CANbus, Profinet, IO-Link)
  • Machine safety systems
  • SQL, OPC-UA, Ignition, Power BI (considered an asset)
  • Office, shop, and construction site environments
  • Approximately 40% office / 60% production floor
  • PPE required in shop and field
  • Occasional travel to customer and vendor sites
  • Flexible hours as required
