We are seeking a detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter to evaluate loan applications and assess financial risks. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that loans meet company guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards while providing efficient support to loan officers and clients. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of mortgage lending policies, and the ability to make sound credit decisions.
KeyResponsibilities
Loan Evaluation & Risk Assessment
- Review and analyze mortgage applications, credit reports, income documents, and property appraisals.
- Assess applicants’ financial health and risk factors to determine loan approval or denial.
- Ensure all applications comply with company guidelines and regulatory requirements (e.g., FHA, VA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac).
- Calculate debt-to-income (DTI) and loan-to-value (LTV) ratios to determine borrowers’ eligibility.
Compliance & Documentation
- Verify loan documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with legal and company standards.
- Maintain detailed and organized underwriting records for audits and quality control.
- Stay updated on mortgage regulations and lending policies to ensure compliance.
Decision-Making & Communication
- Approve, suspend, or decline loan applications based on risk analysis and company policies.
- Provide clear explanations for underwriting decisions to loan officers and processors.
- Work closely with loan officers and processors to gather additional documentation when needed.
- Suggest alternative loan options or conditions to help borrowers qualify when possible.
- Experience: 3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field preferred.
- Certifications: FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) or VA LAPP/SAR certification is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in mortgage underwriting software and loan origination systems (LOS).
- Strong understanding of mortgage products, risk assessment, and financial regulations.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent analytical and decision-making abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
