The Missoula County Auditor's Office is seeking an ASSISTANT AUDITOR to join their team. This position provides objective and professional analysis, advice, and recommendations for improving internal controls, staff utilization, and processes within the County, and performs work associated with claims processing in the County Auditor’s office.

Audits County activities, functions, and programs. Prepares written audit reports providing recommendations to management to correct deficiencies. Appraises the adequacy of recommended corrective actions taken to improve deficient conditions. Reviews and approves claims presented to the County for payment to ensure compliance with applicable state statutes, county policies, and contractual obligations. Prepares risk assessments to develop effective audit programs and an internal audit plan.
Performs monthly or quarterly reconciliations of various County trust accounts. Examines and evaluates financial records, reports, ledgers, journals and work papers for accuracy, completeness and proper disclosure. Reviews and analyzes accounts, records, internal controls, and fiscal procedures. Gathers, reviews and analyzes physical and documentary data on County policies, practices, procedures, and organizational structure. Makes recommendations regarding best practices to improve performance efficiency and effectiveness.
Assists with preparation of schedules in connection with annual external audit. These include schedules of County contracts and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA). Assists departments with solicitations for the procurement of goods and services. Manages content for the Auditor’s Office website and shared documents.
- Requires an associate’s degree. Degrees best suited for this position include accounting and business administration.
- Requires two years of auditing experience in a government or non-profit setting.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
The work requires little physical activity, and the employee commonly remains in an office setting. Requires a significant amount of time performing work at a computer workstation. Requires occasional medium lifting (boxes, 25-35 pounds). May require occasional travel, locally and out of town to meetings and training.
