Position: Transmission Project Manager/ Team Lead

HDR is an employee‑owned company that values inclusion, authenticity, and the impact of our work on the world. Join us to shape how electricity is generated, transmitted, and delivered as global energy demands grow.

Watch our story:

HDR Engineering is seeking a Transmission Project Manager/Team Lead to join our growing and nationally ranked Power Delivery team in Billings, MT.

The primary duties of this role include managing all aspects of high‑voltage electric transmission line projects—scope and proposal development, team assignment, execution, closeout, quality control, scheduling, and budget management. Experience in transmission and distribution line design, permitting, public involvement, and right‑of‑way acquisition is preferred, with strong technical design experience a plus.

Duties also encompass building a local team, leveraging company staff, delivering world‑class services to regional clients, and engaging in business development to support existing and new clients.

  • Perform client management, project management, staff supervision, and/or technical support activities.
  • Lead transmission projects through the entire project life cycle.
  • Apply basic project management tools and techniques: project life cycle, client goals, contract terms, risk, work breakdown structures, scope/schedule/budget, financial management and controls, earned value, communication, team management, change management, and closeout.
  • Coordinate with marketing and technical leadership for business development and expand transmission opportunities.
  • Collaborate with recruiting staff to develop hiring plans and grow a group of transmission professionals.
  • Build, develop, and supervise a local transmission team; oversee workload, quality, utilization, morale, training, and annual performance reviews.
  • Oversee non‑engineering project components such as public involvement, environmental permitting, right‑of‑way acquisition, construction management, and related services.
  • Lead the QA/QC process on projects and commit to world‑class quality.
  • Mentor and supervise one or more PMs, Project Engineers, EITs, CADD/Designers, and administrative staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FE license required; PE license strongly preferred.
  • At least 4 years of transmission line design experience; distribution line design experience a benefit.
  • 7+ years overall experience, including project management and staff management.
  • Strong client management, marketing, and business development skills with relationships to transmission clients.
  • Experience managing staff, clients, contracts, and hiring staff for an engineering consulting firm.
  • Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams across regions, departments, technical managers, and project staff.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 7 years of related experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of project management experience.
  • Ability to interact with various design teams and possess excellent organizational, project management, and communication (written & verbal) skills.
  • Commitment to being an active participant in our employee‑owned culture.
