The City of Missouri City, known as the "Show Me City," is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join its Finance team. This is a mid-level, professional, full-time position within the City's Financial Services Department.

The Staff Accountant performs professional accounting work in support of the City’s financial operations and is responsible for processing financial transactions, conducting research and analysis, maintaining general ledger accounts, preparing journal entries, performing reconciliations, assisting with financial reporting, and supporting the annual audit. The position serves as a departmental lead in various areas of accounting and operating activities and requires an independent thinker with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and internal motivation.

Reporting Relationship: Accounting Manager

  • Serve as the lead for financial accounting transactions for the City.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to City Council members, constituents, vendors, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze and interpret financial data, conduct comparative analyses, and recommend appropriate actions; evaluate proposed changes to accounting methods, processes, and materials.
  • Identify opportunities to increase productivity by streamlining accounting processes and coordinating information requirements.
  • Maintain technical knowledge and professional proficiency by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and contributing to team efforts.
  • Coordinate, prepare, and review financial and management reports, including bank reconciliations and liability account monitoring.
  • Analyze and reconcile monthly cash activities for the City’s operating bank account, Trust Fund account, and Golf Course bank account.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to internal and external audit requests.
  • Prepare journal entries to allocate costs to departments and prepare month-end and year-end adjusting entries and accruals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve accounting issues, provide financial support, and respond to financial inquiries and requests.
  • Perform financial oversight and reconciliation activities by entering data into the City’s financial system, compiling reports, and presenting financial information.
  • Participate in the evaluation and development of internal and external workflows and processes and complete special projects as assigned by Financial Services management.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities and monthly and quarterly liability account reconciliations.
  • Assist with the processing of biweekly and monthly payroll by reviewing and posting personnel action entries and generating and reconciling payroll deduction reports.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and procedures for processing accounting transactions.
  • Process and review accounting assignments for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Complete departmental projects and administrative assignments as directed, including responding to calls, providing requested information, updating policies and procedures manuals, and assisting with special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Remain subject to 24-hour recall as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of verifiable professional experience in governmental accounting or finance within public or municipal organizations.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred.
  • Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) or Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO) credentials are preferred.

The Department of Human Resources & Organizational Development may consider an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Works as an essential employee before, during, and after emergencies or disasters, whether natural or man-made. Subject to emergency operations recall and other assignments necessary to maintain continuity of City services.
