Overview

The Commodity Merchandiser will own the commercial strategy, merchandising, and customer relationships at a rapidly scaling food processor. This person will manage margins, match product specifications with customer needs, and bring a strong understanding of supply and demand dynamics across domestic and international markets.

You will lead pricing, forecasting, margin execution, customer intimacy, and strategic account development. This is an exciting opportunity to join a stable business that values proactive thinkers who use data, market awareness, and customer insights to grow their book of business.

You will have the autonomy to redesign processes, refine pricing models, and sharpen execution in a category where small decisions create meaningful financial outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Merchandising and P&L Ownership:
Lead all merchandising activity with full category P&L responsibility. Set and execute pricing strategies, make timely buy and sell decisions, and ensure profitable contract performance by staying ahead of market movements.
  • Supply and Demand Planning:
Forecast production with operations and supply chain, plan weekly allocation across customers, and manage inventory to meet demand efficiently. Align production forecasts with commercial commitments and address gaps quickly.
  • Customer Relationship Management:
Serve as the primary commercial contact for customers. Build strong, trust based relationships, understand customer needs, support day to day execution, and find opportunities to deepen each account.
  • Business Development:
Expand the customer base through targeted outreach, networking, and market research. Build a healthy pipeline and convert high potential prospects into long term partners that fit the company’s strengths and supply profile.
  • Contract Negotiation and Fulfillment:
Negotiate agreements that balance customer needs with margin goals. Ensure accurate, on time execution of all contract terms by coordinating logistics, quality, and delivery schedules. Address issues promptly to maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Market Intelligence and Strategy:
Monitor global and domestic supply and demand trends, pricing movements, and competitor activity. Translate insights into tactical actions in pricing, allocation, and inventory management. Contribute to strategic planning with leadership.
  • Margin Management:
Analyze product level profitability and identify drivers of variance. Improve pricing models, reduce costs where possible, and ensure all deals meet margin targets. Report on P&L performance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Cross Functional Leadership:
Work closely with operations, QA, logistics, finance, and other teams to ensure smooth execution from production through delivery. Resolve supply, quality, or operational issues with a balanced, solution oriented approach.
  • Travel and Industry Engagement:
Travel to customers and suppliers to strengthen relationships and gather market insight. Represent the company at industry events and use these forums to build connections and stay informed on market developments.
Requirements
  • Experience:

Proven track record in commodity trading, ingredient sales, or category management, preferably in food/beverage or agricultural products. Experience managing a P&L or delivering on gross margin targets is highly desired.
  • Skills:

Strong negotiation skills and commercial acumen. Excellent analytical abilities for market analysis, forecasting, and pricing. Proficiency in supply planning and inventory management. Strong communication and relationship building skills to manage key accounts and lead negotiations.
  • Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of commodity markets; knowledge of the global citrus industry or juice market is a major plus. Familiarity with risk management tools (futures, options, contracts) and supply chain logistics.
  • Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business, Agriculture, Supply Chain, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Advanced training or coursework in commodity trading, finance, or procurement is a plus.
  • Other:
Entrepreneurial mindset with a drive for results and accountability. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and make decisions under uncertainty. Willingness to travel regularly and adapt working hours to connect with partners in different time zones if necessary.
