Project Engineer, Civil Engineering
Overview
The Project Engineer (PE) provides technical and administrative support to ensure the successful planning and execution of construction projects. The PE works closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and clients to maintain project documentation, track progress, resolve issues, and ensure alignment with company standards. This role serves as the foundation of the project management career path, with exposure to all aspects of preconstruction, execution, and closeout.
Responsibilities- Preconstruction (Internal):
Support take-offs, constructability reviews, and scope analysis. - Assist estimating and planning teams with budget alignment and bid reviews.
- Participate in internal project handoff and turnover meetings.
- Preconstruction (External):
Distribute bid documents and track subcontractor responses. - Review vendor and subcontractor proposals for completeness.
- Support subcontractor qualification and buyout processes.
- Project Planning & Management:
Assist in developing project execution plans and logistics. - Support turnover, startup, and risk management processes.
- Maintain project submittal logs, RFIs, and meeting minutes.
- Schedule Management:
Monitor project schedules in coordination with field supervision; track milestones and support recovery planning; update schedule reports for management review. - Contract Management:
Draft, review, and track subcontract agreements and change orders; ensure compliance with contractual terms and reporting; maintain contract documentation for audit readiness. - Financial Management:
Assist with monthly cost reports, forecasts, and budget tracking; process invoices, pay applications, and change order requests; track financial impacts of project changes. - Technology, Education & Process Implementation:
Utilize project management software (e.g., Procore, CMiC, or equivalent); maintain accurate documentation and reporting within company systems; support process improvements and technology adoption. - Safety:
Participate in site safety walks and audits; support enforcement of OSHA and company safety standards; track safety documentation, inspections, and corrective actions. - Client Development & Retention:
Support client communications with timely updates and responses; assist in project presentations, reporting, and debriefs; build professional relationships that contribute to client satisfaction. - Soft Skills & Leadership:
Demonstrate strong communication and problem-solving skills; collaborate effectively with project teams and stakeholders; take initiative in identifying and resolving issues; seek mentorship and actively pursue professional growth.
- Timely and accurate project documentation.
- Submittals, RFIs, and change orders processed on schedule.
- Schedule updates delivered with accuracy.
- Cost reports and forecasts prepared with less than 5% variance.
- Compliance with company and OSHA safety requirements.
- Client feedback reflecting responsiveness and professionalism.
- Positive feedback from supervisors and peers on teamwork and initiative.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- 0–3 years of construction or engineering experience (internships or co-ops acceptable).
- Strong organizational and technical skills.
- Familiarity with scheduling, estimating, and project management software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Combination of office and on-site project work.
- Regular collaboration with field leadership, design teams, and project partners.
- Sit or stand for most of a typical workday.
- Maneuver between floors of the office.
- Lift and move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to reach above shoulder level for filing or gathering data and records.
