The Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery will manage the inpatient care for the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service on the night shift. Key responsibilities include assessment, planning, and evaluation of patient care across general surgery, surgical intensive care unit, and trauma resuscitation, as well as performing surgical consultations and coordinating procedures.
Responsibilities- Participate in inpatient sign‑out at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Follow up with the General Surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians.
- Engage in trauma resuscitations and perform surgical consultations for potential general surgery patients.
- Manage the care and organization of procedures, including scheduling operations and interventional procedures.
- Discharge patients with comprehensive summaries, instructions, and medication regimens.
- Triaging phone calls and reviewing critical labs.
- Obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and assess patient health needs.
- Identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients, maintaining timely and compliant documentation.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary care and communicate with patients, families, and referring physicians.
- Current, active, and unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in the State of California.
- Current DEA number and BLS certification.
- Current ACLS and PALS certifications; ATLS certification within six months of hire.
- Completed practice agreements and UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- HIPAA and other required trainings completed;
Annual TB screening and JCAHO‑required tests. - Demonstrated understanding of privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to PHI.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
- Customer‑service orientation and ability to establish effective working relationships across the UCI Health System.
- Diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, and other health‑care personnel.
- Ability to use specialized medical equipment and procedures, maintain an appropriate work pace, and keep accurate records.
- Experience in Trauma/Critical Care.
- Surgical services experience (scrubbing, draping, retracting, suture techniques).
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
