Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Director of the Woodfords Indian Education Center (WIEC) is responsible for administering all operations of the WIEC and its component programs and coordinating all educational resources provided to Native American/Alaska Native (NA/AN) K-12th grade students, parents, community members, teachers, counselors, principals, District Superintendents, and other school district staff. The WIEC Director is responsible for writing, preparing and submitting the American Indian Education Center (AIEC) Program grant application and the Continuing AIEC Program grant application each year accordingly;

and creating, implementing, revising, and submitting AIEC WIEC budget for approval to the California Department of Education American Indian Education Office; in addition, writing, preparing, revising, and submitting the Institute of Museum and Library Services Native American Library Service Basic Grant and Enhancement Grant, when applicable. Responsible for meeting all required California Department of Education American Indian Education Office deadlines;

required to attend all AIEC Director meetings and the annual California Conference on American Indian Education; submitting Mid-Year Program and End of the Year Program Activity reports, and WIEC Inventory forms, as well as ensuring all First, Second, Third, and Final Quarter Expenditure Reports are submitted by the Washoe Tribe’s Accounting Office by AIEC Program deadlines. Oversees the implementation and completion of the annual California Healthy Kids Survey.

Supervises center staff, approves budgeted expenditures, prepares outside funding proposals, and reports to and at all Woodfords Washoe Community Council Meetings and Washoe Tribe Manager’s Meetings. The WIEC Director must adhere to 60% Direct Service and 40% Administrative schedule and documentation required by the California Department of Education’s American Indian Education Office. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversees and implements educational and cultural programming at the WIEC for the benefit of NA/AN K-12th grade students who reside in the Hung-A-Lel-Ti Community and in Alpine County, California.
  • Oversees, writes, implements, revises, and submits the WIEC Library’s Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Native American Library Services Basic Grant and IMLS Native American Library Services Enhancement Grant, when applicable.
  • Responsible for coordination of resources in collaboration with Alpine County Schools, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, and Douglas County School District staff and administration to ensure NA/AN student success within the K-12th grade academic school environment.
  • Responsible for the oversight of WIEC staff in providing assistance to NA/AN high school students in preparation towards graduation, identifying educational resource need, and providing information and advising for college preparation, college entrance, and vocational training/employment.
  • Distributes information and attends meetings between administrators, teachers, tutors, counselors, and parents regarding NA/AN students’ progress in the public school system.
  • Assists in and or develops culturally responsive curriculum for NA/AN students.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the WIEC Summer Enrichment Program and other WIEC academic programs.
  • Responsible for the creation, coordination, and implementation of the annual Back to School Night & Dinner and the annual End of the Year Student Recognition Night & Dinner, Graduation Dinner, and Quarterly Student Good Grade Incentive Program.
  • Maintains monthly schedule of staff/organizational/tribal/AIEC/school district meetings and communicates opportunities to WIEC staff to ensure appropriate staff development.
