Position: Sociology Adjunct Instructor (TEMPORARY)
Location: Pleasant Hill

Overview

Sociology Adjunct Instructor (TEMPORARY). The San Ramon and Pleasant Hill Campuses of Diablo Valley College are seeking instructors for Fall 2026 and for their adjunct instructor pools. Successful applicants will teach Introduction to Sociology and other Sociology courses in a mix of modalities – 100% in-person, hybrid, and online. Candidates should be able to teach in-person classes.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines and class schedules.
  • Create and maintain an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking.
  • Evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters and grades student work.
  • Meet with students outside of class.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Maintain accurate academic records.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

The disciplines listed in the minimum qualifications are determined by the statewide Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. A Doctoral degree (PhD) is considered to encompass a master’s degree (MA or MS).

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Master’s in Sociology
  • OR Bachelor’s in Sociology AND Master’s in Anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work or psychology
  • OR the equivalent (if degree majors are not an exact match, submit an equivalency form as part of the application).

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Ph.D. or Master’s in Sociology.
  • Ability and interest in teaching Sociology courses listed in the DVC catalog, especially Introduction to Sociology, and other courses such as SOCIO 131 The Urban Community.
  • Ability to teach in-person classes and in a mix of modalities (100% in-person, hybrid, online).
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, including historically underserved and underrepresented groups.
  • Ability to teach in DVC’s dual enrollment programs with local high schools.

Salary and Benefits

Adjunct instructor classroom faculty pay rate is $77.87-$128.97 per hour (up to $151.16). Other pay ranges apply for full-time positions as described in the posting. Benefits information is provided by the district and includes eligibility for STRS and district-paid benefits for eligible employees.
