SALARYAll new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($26.69). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($30.95).
JOB SUMMARYPersons in these positions work part-time (3.5 hours per day) or full-time (6 hours per day), Monday - Friday, during the school session. Under the general supervision of a certificated teacher or administrator, assists students who have acute or chronic health problems which require daily, ongoing care, or monitoring by trained personnel to meet the physical requirements of attending classes, often at a special education school;
performs a variety of instructional support duties in developing life skills and/or physical care activities; performs related duties as assigned.
- Assists teachers in assigned features of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students with a wide range of disabilities.
- Assists in instructing,, monitoring, and record keeping of assigned students in basic academic language, personal hygiene, grooming, and self-help activities.
- Administers medications prescribed for students and maintains related logs and records.
- Administers gastroscopy tube feedings, oral feedings, tracheotomy suctioning, and catheter care as required.
- Demonstrates personal hygiene and grooming functions for students with severe physical disabilities.
- Assists in physical transferring and lifting students to and from wheelchairs.
- Utilizes approved District restraint training to assist with restraining students as appropriate.
- May be assigned to accompany students or transport to and from school as required by IEP.
- May accompany, assist, and monitor students on community-based instructional outings and field trips.
Working in a classroom or community environment with students with a wide range of disabilities, may lift or move students weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance, and may need to push wheelchairs up and down inclines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma and at least one year of paid experience working full-time with individuals with disabilities, or current enrollment in a nursing, medical or health-related program and some experience with individuals with disabilities. Must meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement.
CERTIFICATEMust possess, or obtain within the first month of employment, and maintain a valid First Aid Certificate and a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.

- Assist in the supervision and instruction of medically fragile and/or orthopedically impaired students.
- Perform essential health care and personal hygiene tasks for students.
- Safely and skillfully perform specialized health care services as directed or required.
- Assist students with dressing, eating, and toileting.
- Recognize and effectively respond to emergency and hazardous conditions.
