Position: CES TOSNET DESERT ELECTRIC CREW

Job Title

CES TOSNET DESERT ELECTRIC CREW – Department of Transportation, JC‑503521.

Salary

$6,354.00 – $7,893.00 per month. New to State candidates hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range when applicable.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Caltrans Electrical Area Superintendent, the Caltrans Electrical Supervisor (CES) is responsible for:

  • Managing in‑District HQ Traffic Operations Systems Network (TOSNET) contract, Fiber Repair Contract, and Hub Contract.
  • Working closely with HQ TOSNET Coordinator; monitoring budgets, writing task orders, overseeing contractors, monitoring progress, inspecting work, signing invoices and preparing records.
  • Training and advising contractors on repair, maintenance, and TMS communications network.
  • Serving as liaison between Traffic Operations and Electrical Maintenance for TMS communications, training district electricians, and preparing reports and presentations.
  • Supervising and working with a crew of Caltrans Electricians II and TOSNET contract employees on installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical facilities on State highways in San Diego and Imperial counties.
  • Responding to emergency calls; working overtime, weekends, and intermittent shifts as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Eligibility determined by score on Caltrans Electrical Supervisor exam.
  • Current state examination list eligibility (transfer, reinstatement, LEAP, SROA, Surplus). For new‑to‑state, must be on state examination list.
  • Valid Class C driver’s license; commercial license desirable.
  • Ability to travel throughout the district; ability to work outdoors under varied weather conditions.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment: hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, face shield, respirators, ear plugs, and approved footwear.
  • Valid driver’s license required when operating state‑owned or leased vehicles.
Desired Qualifications
  • Class A or B driver’s license with tank vehicle endorsement.
  • Experience with TMS communications network.
  • Prior supervisory experience on electrical projects.
Working Conditions

Position located at District 11 Maintenance Division East Region, San Diego County. Work is performed in a climate‑controlled maintenance station and outdoors. Weather ranges from cold and windy to very hot. Duties include operating heavy equipment, handling chemicals, and walking on uneven terrain. Travel within the district and occasional travel to other areas is required.
