Our team partners with municipalities to ensure high-quality engineering solutions that enhance community safety and sustainability. We are seeking a Public Works Inspector to join our engineering department, overseeing the inspection of municipal infrastructure, private development projects, and utility construction.

The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with engineering standards, municipal codes, and regulatory requirements while maintaining strong relationships with contractors, engineers, and public agencies. This position requires technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Inspection of Public Works & Infrastructure Projects

• Conduct field inspections of streets, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, water and sewer systems, traffic control measures, and municipal infrastructure.
• Verify construction compliance with approved engineering plans, specifications, and municipal, state, and federal standards.
• Monitor ADA improvements, asphalt paving, slurry seal, micro surfacing, sidewalk/driveway installations, and traffic safety measures.
• Perform final inspections to confirm project completion and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, documenting progress, material usage, test results, and field conditions.
• Maintain accurate records of work completed to support compliance, payment processing, and project approvals.
• Compile photographs and technical notes as evidence of compliance or discrepancies.
• Write notices of non-compliance, corrective action recommendations, and project status updates.

Safety & Compliance Oversight

• Monitor construction sites for adherence to OSHA standards, traffic control measures, and worker/public safety protocols.
• Identify potential safety hazards and ensure appropriate corrective measures are implemented.
• Address public safety concerns related to construction activities.

Project Coordination & Stakeholder Communication

• Serve as a liaison between contractors, engineers, utility companies, and municipal agencies to ensure smooth project execution.
• Attend pre-construction and progress meetings to clarify inspection requirements and provide technical input.
• Communicate project schedules, potential impacts, and safety concerns to property owners, businesses, and the general public.
• Monitor project timelines and contractor performance, recommending work stoppages or corrective actions when necessary.

Plan & Specification Review

• Review engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications before and during construction to identify potential compliance issues.
• Recommend adjustments or modifications to meet engineering and regulatory standards.

Field Inspections & Permit Compliance

• Conduct field inspections for encroachment permits, utility relocations, and adjacent property impacts.
• Verify compliance with temporary and permanent erosion control measures.

Conflict Resolution & Technical Assistance

• Address conflicts or discrepancies between engineering plans, field conditions, and contractor work.
• Handle public complaints and inquiries related to construction projects.
• Provide technical guidance to contractors, junior inspectors, and project stakeholders.

Environmental & Infrastructure Compliance

• Monitor construction sites for compliance with stormwater pollution prevention (SWPPP) and environmental regulations.
• Ensure proper utility installations, infrastructure protection, and erosion control measures.

Emergency Response & Problem-Solving

• Assist in emergency situations related to construction activities, such as utility breaks, flooding, or traffic incidents.
• Provide rapid assessment and recommendations for mitigating impacts.

Ongoing Learning & Development

• Stay current with engineering standards, construction methods, materials, and municipal codes.
• Attend training sessions, certifications, and industry seminars as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education & Certification

• Equivalent to completion of 12th grade, supplemented by specialized training in public works inspection, civil engineering, or a related field.
• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License (required).
